Mixed Messages Engages Youth about Sexual Consent

TORONTO (15 April 2015) – Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) invites you to experience the transformative nature of forum theatre through their show Mixed Messages a production about sexual consent. The production will have a performance on April 20 at the Young Lives Restored Conference at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga ON, before touring to Ontario secondary schools throughout May 2015.

Telling the story of Teesha, a young woman determined to balance academics and a social life at school, Mixed Messages content coincides recent changes to the Ontario sexual education curriculum, addressing issues of consent, drugs, alcohol, and peer pressure. The show asks students what could have been said or done differently to make clearer choices and find their voice in uncomfortable situations.

Mixed Messages empowers teens to make healthy choices, provides positive options and solutions to peer pressure, and incites an important discussion about consent. Using forum theatre, it invites students to ‘rehearse for reality’ by replacing the actors on stage and changing the outcome of the play.

Students often identify the ability to participate in the scenarios and make changes to the outcome as a highlight of the experience. Says one student, “I thought it was very affective [sic] and have seen other students actually use what they learned from it”. Said another student, of the production, “it’s great for students who are going through the struggle, and those who aren't because it gives them the chance to analyze the situation and try to do what they can to "stop it” and "change it".

Mixed Messages will be available for Ontario schools May 4th - 15th and universities and colleges in summer 2015.
