Why Does Google Keep Changing?

In our blog post on The Secret To Beating Google’s Algorithm Changes, I mentioned that it’s not uncommon for people to think of Google as the “evil empire” and cast them in a negative light, particularly when there’s an announced or revealed algorithm change, like this latest one regarding mobile-friendliness.

The fact is, Google is not evil, far from it. The problem is that most of us are both clients and suppliers for Google, and that confuses our relationship with the company in our minds.

We need to keep in mind that Google is a company whose primary service is in helping Internet users to find the information they’re looking for as quickly as possible. When you do a Google search for something, you’re a client, and Google is actively trying to make sure that the results it provides are the best possible results for you.

That means that every day, the developers at Google are looking for ways to better score and rank websites, weed out garbage, and beat the masses of SEO’s that are constantly looking for ways to bypass Google’s algorithms and get their sites ranked even higher.

As businesses, we obviously want and think our websites and content should be ranked first, but the reality is that Google doesn’t have our best interests in mind. Instead, we need to always think about Google and approach our search engine strategy with the mindset of our target audience. What are they searching for, and how can we best answer those questions? In that sense, we are suppliers to Google, and Google doesn’t owe us anything.

So keep that in mind as we move through this latest algorithm change from Google, and look ahead to the next one. If you’re approaching the creation of content and your online business with the right mindset, and have done your due diligence when it comes to constructing your website, each new adjustment from Google will likely benefit you. When Google takes steps to remove and penalize the businesses that are doing SEO wrong, the rest of us win.

Tip of the Week

A well designed site draws your visitors into a page’s content, and helps them continue through your content to the most wanted response (MWR) for that page. A poorly designed page distracts them (at best) from your content and MWR. At worst, it sends them fleeing to the Back button.
