I. News and Announcements
• The
2nd Annual Women in Media Conference will be 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, in the ILC Communication Hub, room N301. Journalism alums
Anna Meiler and
Hannah McGoldrick will be panelists. This event is business casual.
•
Gabriel Dance will host
"Growing Up Digital: From the Times to the Marshall Project" at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, in the ILC Communication Hub, room N301. Dance is the digital managing editor at
the Marshall Project, an online investigative news organization covering America's criminal justice system. A reception will follow in the Journalism Hub.
• The department hosted international freelance journalist
Katie Manning last Thursday. Manning shared advice with students regarding working abroad, networking and multitasking equipment while reporting. (See the
tumblr post with Gabriela Santana '16 interviewing Manning).
•
Leykia D. Brill has been named to the newly created position of assistant provost for diversity, effective May 6. Brill will play a leadership role in the university's ongoing efforts to make the undergraduate student body more diverse and inclusive.
• The Sydney Pollack film "
Absence of Malice" will be shown at 1:25 p.m. on Monday, April 27, in ILC room 211 for Jim Foudy's Journalism 300 class. The 1980s drama is about an investigative reporter who violates many of the tenets of journalism in pursuit of a big story, a cautionary tale about libel and media responsibility. While the film depicts production methods of a bygone era, its lessons about journalism are timeless. Everyone is welcome.
• Washington Post Columnist and best-selling author Charles Krauthammer, will present
"Consequences of American Retreat" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, at the Fine Arts Center. Krauthammer will discuss President Obama's policies and global politics. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Free for students, staff and faculty with ID.
• The UMass Amherst libraries will host a
Human Library event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, in the Learning Commons (lower level) of the Du Bois Library. The Human Library provides an opportunity to "check out" a "living book" for 15 minutes of informal one-on-one conversation in a safe and encouraging environment. For more information click

• Are you interested in graphic design, illustration, animation, web design, and/or information design? The
UMass Amherst Design Club meets every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the ILC room S413.

II. Freelancing, Internships and Scholarships

Amherst Media encourages journalism students to apply for internships or submit work to be published. Amherst Media publishes audio, print, video and photography. The ideal candidates should be interested in reporting on issues in the community. Info can be found

MassAccess will be
holding a conference at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 27. MassAccess represents community media centers in Massachusetts. Students get in for free with ID. Register online

III. Advising Information
•
Graduation is approaching! Journalism seniors can find all important information on the graduation festivities
here.
The Journalism Senior Brunch will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, in the Journalism Hub of the ILC. Please bring your families and guests.
• Graduating Seniors are invited to attend the
Undergraduate Commencement Fair from 1 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29, in the Student Union Ballroom. Have your senior portrait taken, sign up with the Alumni Association, purchase a diploma frame and other grad gear, enter to win prizes and get cap and gown.
• Today, Monday, April 20 in a holiday. The university will follow a Monday schedule on Wednesday, April 22. The last day of classes is Thursday, April 30, which will follow a Monday schedule.
• Finals will begin on Friday, May 1 and will continue until Thursday, May 7. To check your final exam schedule, log on to your SPIRE account and click "Final Exam Schedule" under the "Student Home" tab.
• One section of Journ 300 is still open: Tuesday/Thursday, 2:30-4:30 p.m., Prof. Shaheen Pasha (sophomore, juniors and senior Journalism majors only).
• One section of Journ 301 is still open: Monday/Wednesday, 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Prof. Olga Kyle (Journ 300 prerequisite).
• A new section of Journalism Ethics has been opened: Tuesday/Thursday, 10-11:15 a.m., Prof. Karen List (junior and senior Journalism majors only).
• If you are graduating this summer, make sure you checked your Academic Requirements Report with
Raz.
• You can now
register for the following online Journalism courses offered this summer. All of these courses count toward your regular Journalism BA degree but are not covered by tuition.

• Eric Bosco ('15) and Kayla Marchetti ('14) were honored this past weekend at the Society for Professional Journalists Region 1 Conference at Hofstra University for their story on confidential informants at UMass that ran in The Boston Globe last September. Bosco and Marchetti were recognized as finalists in the In-Depth Reporting category for large universities. (See photo on top right).
• Prof. Madeleine Blais
will present on narrative/documentary storytelling at Brown University on Tuesday, April 21.
• Sionan Barrett ('16) will officially take office as the
SGA President on April 22.
• Eric Bosco ('15) will be the Journalism student speaker at the
SBS Senior Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 9.

V. Alumni News
•
Taylor Snow ('14) recently accepted a position with the Boston Celtics to be their digital production coordinator. Snow was discovered by the Celtics' VP of digital media via LinkedIn. He will report for the Celtics and maintain their website.
