Principal's Newsletter
School Update 4/13/15

BHS families,

Thank you so much for such a warm welcome to Bonsall.  I have felt very supported by the students, staff, district, and parents here and I look forward to getting to know all of you further.

As we are in the early phase of building the high school, there are a lot of quick decisions to make that are hard to communicate effectively.  Sometimes while building out a new school, we find out new information and have to change plans according to what is best for our students and our available resources.  My hope is that this newsletter will be a way I can keep you posted on events and gather your input with some regularity as I have new updates to share.  I am so excited about the work that lies ahead and I hope you feel very much a part of the legacy that we are creating together.

UPCOMING MEETINGS
  • PING Meeting Tuesday April 14th in the Student Services Building at 8:30 AM
  • Parent-Teacher Conference on Thursday April 16th from 2:45-4:45 PM
All teachers will all be available in the Geo-Lit Room (Costa-Calderon) from 2:45-4:45 after school.   If  you cannot make that time, please reach out to Angie Meza in the High School Office to make an appointment.  Teachers updated grades before spring break so anything that you see should be reflective of student's current status. Here is a link to the echo login, if you have forgotten your username or password please let Mr. Costa know so he can help.

Planning Updates

PE Changes
Hopefully you received the note from your student that Ms. Messina-Kleinman will be stepping out of the classroom to help develop PE and health curriculum for the district.  She has completed the fitness testing and trained students to design student-led PE curriculum which Mr. Benedict will continue to use and support.  Additionally Ms. Calderon and Ms. Abarca will be supervising the female locker rooms.  We are excited to have this resource in the district and having small class sizes allows us to take advantage of Ms. Messina-Kleinman's passion as a curriculum developer while continuing to offer a solid PE program for the students.

Master Schedule
We have put together a draft Master Schedule for next year as an important step in hiring.  Students Sean McKenzie-Heck, Amy Sanchez, and Dillon Gunther all helped with the drafting and provided some valuable input on the actual placement of the classes.  We will be posting job positions in the next few days and hope to be hiring the following full-time staff: Music, Social Studies, Special Education, Math, and Physical Education.  We are in the hiring window now and hope to find some stellar candidates to add to our superstar staff.

Facilities
Today was my first facilities meeting with our wonderful building team that has been working hard all year.  The district has provided a stellar team of individuals who will insure that our students will have an innovative, strong design and a quality school where they can thrive in the latest research in learning spaces.  On May 1st, we will have some members of our design team come to the high school at 8:45 in the morning to work with interested students on the interior color and texture options.  If you are interested in attending this meeting and providing input, please send me an email confirming your attendance so we can have additional chairs set up.
Current Student Projects
Students are working on so many interesting projects right now, please feel free to come by and visit the classes.

Biofitness and Math
Students are working with BHS and SMS staff to put in place a garden for students using math and science concepts.  They are learning about various irrigation techniques and the most efficient way to provide water for a garden under drought conditions

Geolit
You may have had students asking you questions about family folklore and tall tales as part of their learning about folktales. The project focuses on the relationship between folklore, fairy tales, urban legends, and the cultural geography that these stories represent.

Spanish
Students are working on learning more grammar and vocabulary to apply to their TV Novela Project.  Within the next couple of weeks, they will be developing the plot and their characters, and then writing their scripts in Spanish.  Students will then film and edit their work.

What else do you want to know about?  Please let me know what other information would be of interest to you?

Next newsletter may include:
  • Final Master Schedule for 9th and 10th grade
  • Sports Approval Updates
  • Business Advisory Update
  • Other fun new information
