Construction Season 2015 under way on Ohio Turnpike

The Ohio Turnpike's 2015 construction season kicks off this week with its largest capital improvement program in more than a decade. The Commission anticipates spending as much as $125 million this year on projects throughout northern Ohio.

“The Commission is proud to have planned its largest capital improvement program in more than a decade," said Executive Director Randy Cole. "Our program not only provides jobs for thousands across the state, but also keeps the Turnpike in excellent condition, which customers rightly expect."

Included in this ambitious construction season is pavement resurfacing projects and base pavement replacement encompassing 70 mainline lane miles and the rehabilitation and repair of numerous bridges across the entire length of the Ohio Turnpike. For your information and convenience, we have included links below to important detour information at locations where bridges will be closed temporarily for repairs and rehabilitation.

Ohio Turnpike debuts 'Simulated Work Zone' at Customer Appreciation Events now through November

As part of National Work Zone Safety Awareness, the Ohio Turnpike recently debuted an innovative Simulated Work Zone at its Vermilion Valley Service Plaza.

A crew captured compelling close-up video with a GoPro camera attached to moving maintenance vehicles. The footage was projected onto a wall in the "Work Zone Simulation Room," complete with natural sound broadcasting as traffic whooshed by workers to the amazement of onlookers.

"The Simulated Work Zone illustrates the dangers of injury or death that Turnpike workers face very day because motorists fail to give them enough room to work safely," said Adam Greenslade, Director of Government Affairs, Marketing & Communications.

Tragically, nine highway workers have been killed while on the job on the Ohio Turnpike since 1970. Across the nation, 23 highway workers are killed every month. According to a recent Occupational Safety and Health Administration report, 70 percent of the "struck-by" deaths in work zones are caused by motorists intrusions.

Watch the video below and witness what it's like to work in an Ohio Turnpike Construction Zone.  Move Over, Slow Down. You just might save a tragedy from occurring.

6 Tips to keep your E-ZPass® account hassle-free

Keeping your Ohio Turnpike E-ZPass account up-to-date is the most important thing you can do to avoid hassles at the toll gates while traveling. Here are six tips to help you avoid problems with your account:

1. Mount your transponder in the proper place behind the rear view mirror on the windshield. This is the best way to ensure that you won't encounter any problems in the E-ZPass lanes at the toll gates or be required to pay the  maximum toll.
2. Keep your mailing and e-mail address current.
3. Make sure your vehicle information is up-to-date, which includes your license plate information.
4. Make sure your credit card information is current on your account, including new expiration dates.
5. Make sure to list a contact person in the event you need someone to call us to update your account information.
6. Do not keep additional unshielded transponders in your vehicle. To ensure accurate toll assessment, any transponders in your vehicle other than the one mounted on your windshield must be shielded in the sealable bag that it came shipped in.

Ohio Turnpike partners with Interstate Towing to promote driving without distractions

As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month and as part of its effort to prevent crashes, the Ohio Turnpike recently partnered with Interstate Towing to educate customers on the dangers of distracted driving.

An example of a demolished passenger vehicle was on display at the Middle Ridge Service Plaza on April 17. Distracted driving is characterized by the presence of visual, manual or cognitive distractions a person engages in that distract from the primary driving task.

"Eliminating distractions behind the wheel will increase safety for our customers and our workers during the 2015 construction season," said Adam Greenslade, Director of Government Affairs, Marketing & Communications.
