A note from the Enviroschools Team

Welcome back to Term 2 and some slightly crisper mornings!

A couple of changes in the air at Enviroschools include a new support person for the Te Upoko o te Ika a M
āui team.  Claire Reddish, mother of two young children and enthusiastic about sustainability and community, has joined the team and is rapidly sorting out our systems.  It's great having her with us.

Another change in the wind that is that from 1 May onwards The Enviroschools Foundation, the national organisation supporting the Enviroschools Programme in the regions, is stepping into a new name: Toimata Foundation.

The new name recognises  that as well as Enviroschools, the foundation supports Te Aho Tū Roa, Kōtuia and, in the future, potentially other programmes.  The name Toimata evokes ideas of creativity and craft, sustainability and vision.  Don't be concerned though, the Enviroschools Programme will keep the same name and schools registered with the programme will still be called Enviroschools,

PLD consists of initial workshop day, online support and a follow up workshop day (approximately 6 weeks later). It is expected that the principal (or a member of the leadership team) and at least one teacher from each school will attend both the initial and follow-up workshops.

Opportunities for students

The Museum of City and Sea  is offering to support bus trips  to groups of year 5-9 students from decile 1-7 schools across the region to explore 150 years of Wellington  as a capital which includes the broader story of Wellington as a region from the discovery of its harbour by Kupe to its development into our capital city. The range of programmes on offer include story telling, craft activities and guided trips along the waterfront.   The educators are super flexible and are happy to build a programme to meet your needs.  Look here for some examples of what's on offer.
Wellington Harbour

DOC Wellington Track and Trap Progamme

The Department of Conservation’s Partnerships Ranger can work with your school to support learning and action about animal pests such as rats, stoats and hedgehogs.  She can lend out tracking tunnels to find out what’s living at your school and at the homes of your students and show you how to use them.  Once you’ve found out what’s living in your area, she can help you control any pests by lending out traps and train parents and teachers on how to use them.

Sustainable Coastlines Love Your Water Tree Planting and Training workshops - in our region in June.

Welcome Home Competition - Making Space for Refugees offers students the opportunity to learning more about the stories and journeys behind refugees and newly arrived migrants, and what it takes as a community to welcome them and then to enter a competition where they create an interactive map of their community, plotting places of belonging and information - hopefully creating an understanding of the obstacles and issues newly-arrived people may face.  The maps made will then be made available to people who work alongside refugees to support them to settle into a new place.  There's a Teachers pack available too.

 Entries close until 17 October.
