Neighborhood News

April 15, 2015

Pabst Park Neighborhood Friends,

We had a great Egg Hunt with the Inglewood Heights neighborhood this year.  A little chilly, but no snow and SUNSHINE!  Thanks to all who participated and THANK YOU to our volunteer Easter Bunny, Eve Wolf-Brown!  We would love your opinion on changing the time for next year.  Typically we hold the egg hunt a week before Easter as many folks are already traveling closer to the holiday date.   We are considering moving the time up to 11am rather than a 1pm egg hunt so as not to conflict with napping toddlers.  If you have an opinion about timing or would like to be in charge of running the Egg Hunt next year, please email me.

Unfortunately there have been several vehicles stolen recently from the East Tosa area.  If you didn't already receive the "Tosa Watch" newsletter from the Wauwatosa Police Department, you can view it
here.  The newsletter includes many safety tips and services the WPD can offer homeowners.  Do you know your Block Watch Captain? He or she would've delivered your newsletter.  Watch for more information as the PPNA works with the WPD to increase awareness about the Block Watch program later this year.
Thanks for your time and membership,

Tammy

From the NAC eBlast:

Yard Waste Pick-up Begins April 15

Yard Waste is collected at your curb on your usual garbage day, on the opposite week as your recycling. Leaves and brush must continue to be separated from other household garbage.
• DO NOT include grass clippings, root balls, vegetables, stumps or branches over 6 inches in diameter.
• Mark reusable containers with "Yard Waste" or "Yard Materials" in letters that are 2 inches or larger. You may also use paper bags. Please do not place your yard materials in plastic bags.
• Bundle brush with string/twine. Please do not use wire or plastic. Your bundles may not be longer than 4 feet and heavier than 50 lbs. If they exceed this load, a special pick-up is required.

Public Forum on State Budget this Friday, 4/17

The Wauwatosa Committee for Citizens with Disabilities and Grassroots Tosa are sponsoring a public hearing on the impact of the proposed state budget on programs for the disabled, elderly and school families, at 6 p.m. Friday, April 17 in Wauwatosa City Hall Auditorium. Speakers include Stephanie Sue Stein, director of the Milwaukee County Department on Aging; Barbara Beckert of Disability Rights Wisconsin; Shawn Rolland of Support Our Schools Wauwatosa; and Alderman Dennis McBride. Let your voice be heard as well. State Rep. Dale Kooyenga will be in attendance and Reps. Leah Vukmir and Rob Hutton have been invited.

Run Tosa Run Neighborhood Team Contest

The Tosa East Towne Neighborhood Association is organizing its annual 5K race to benefit the Ronald McDonald House on Saturday, May 16, and this year other neighborhoods are invited to join in the fun! Promote the run to your neighborhood association and encourage your members to enter your neighborhood association team name when they register. TETNA will keep track of the registrations, and the neighborhood with the largest team participating will win our new traveling trophy and bragging rights for the next year! Extend the fun by meeting up for training runs in your own neighborhood and meeting up at one of our many sponsoring businesses along North Ave after the race. TETNA hopes that this contest will become an annual Tosa tradition. For more details about the race or to register, go to RunTosaRun.org.

City Now Offers Electronics Recycling

The Wauwatosa Drop-off Center is now accepting TVs and computer monitors of all types (tube, projection, LED and cabinet) for a fee of $25 each. Fax machines, printers, scanners and towers are free. All hard drives are removed and destroyed for your security. The new Drop-off Center hours are Tuesday and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Permit fees for other household use are $5.00 per load, one-time only. For information on revised Drop-Off Center fees and rules, go to the City website.

April Is Autism Awareness Month

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) would like to increase awareness about the issues of wandering in children with autism. Nearly half of children with autism will wander from safe environments, and more than one-third of children who wander are considered nonverbal—they may not even respond to their name being called.  They may seek out small or enclosed spaces, wander toward places of special interest to them (particularly water), or they may try to escape overwhelming stimuli such as sights, sounds or activities of others.

Parents: Contact the Tosa Police Department immediately if your child wanders and begin your search right away. For information on tracking devices, call the Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin 414-988-1260 or go to www.assew.org.

Community members: If you come across a child who appears lost, call the Police Department immediately and stay with the child. Remember that children with autism may shrink away from touch, so maintain a safe distance, keeping the child in sight.

John Gurda: Made in Milwaukee, An Economic History of Brewtown

Milwaukee has made its living in a multitude of ways over the last 175 years. Growing from roots in shipping and grain-handling, the city became a manufacturing powerhouse, sending its products all over the globe. In recent years, service industries have claimed a larger place on the economic smorgasbord. From beer to gears and from hides to Harleys, “Made in Milwaukee” will offer a colorful and enlightening look at the people and products that have made Milwaukee famous.

Wednesday, April 15, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Firefly Room

Sponsored by the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning, the program is free and open to the public.

US 45 Resurfacing Project

Work continues on the resurfacing of US45 between Burleigh and Silver Spring. The work will occur overnight and requires night-time lane restrictions. The project is slated for completion Fall 2015.

Some construction activities are likely to create noise and/or dust, and some work may be conducted at night during the course of the project. See WisDOT Flyer.

Be a Responsible Pet Owner

City ordinance requires pet owners to periodically clean up animal excrement on their property. A pet walker is responsible for the animal’s acts on public and private property. Pets must be on a leash that does not exceed 10 feet while being walked. A feces scoop or dog waste bags must be carried and used. It is illegal to discard feces in the street, sewer, or on property other than your own. Wrap the animal waste and place it in with your garbage.
