Advocacy Strategies for Student Leaders: Navigating Governance Structures and Moving Ideas into Action

Overview
This webinar will focus on the role of student advocacy and student-led initiatives in catalyzing change in the post-secondary environment. Participants will gain insights on how to understand and navigate governance structures, identify and build partnerships, align initiatives with institutional priorities, and develop their ideas into action plans to make an impact on student mental health and wellbeing on their campus.
The webinar will consist of a presentation outlining key considerations and strategies, along with case study examples from UBC and an open Q&A discussion among participants. We invite you to share your priorities and questions when you register to enable the presenters to prepare content and select case studies that best fit the needs of participants.
Note that this webinar is open to non-students who are interested in the topic.
Co-Presenters
Mona Maleki: Mona is in her final year of study at UBC and is currently the co-chair of UBC’s Student Senate Caucus, Chair of the UBC Mental Health Network, and Chair of UBC Vancouver’s Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Student Mental Health and Wellbeing.
Kiran Mahal: Kiran is a recent graduate of UBC, where she served as the Vice President Academic and University Affairs for the Alama Mater Society (AMS) and two terms as a Student Senator. Kiran currently works at UBC in the VP Students portfolio.
Kiran and Mona have both served as past Presidents of the UBC Science Undergraduate Society, and in their two terms as Student Senators led the establishment of the UBC Vancouver Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Student Mental Health and Wellbeing.

Overview
We are very excited to be offering an enhanced version of the webinar: Putting the Pieces Together: Low-Risk Cannabis Use on Campus. This webinar will coincide with April 20, 2015 or “4:20â€, a timely contribution on a topic that may be on some of the minds of our campus stakeholders.
The current atmosphere around cannabis on Canadian campuses and in society is quite hazy. This is partly the result of conflicting messages around the impact of consumption on those who use the substance.
This webinar will aim to dispel some of the haze. It will consider incidence, motivations for and effects of use, offer some suggestions on content for communication to encourage lower-risk practice among those who decide to use cannabis, and allude to means through which that messaging can be shared on campus.
Learning Objectives
To become familiar with both micro and macro level factors that influence cannabis use both on and off campus
To consider the beneficial and harmful aspects of cannabis use and how these aspects impact decisions about use on campus
To explore the role of prevailing attitudes and current legislature when creating campus cannabis use policies
To become familiar with the Paradox of Prohibition Curve and the tradeoffs around various substance use policies
To explore areas for action on campus around cannabis, including managing accessibility, quality control, information brokering, contexts for use, policy and messaging
