ESCC Updates                  April 2015

Raise awareness of seniors issues during election campaign

Healthcare, transportation and supports which allow seniors to remain in their homes as they age have a considerable influence on quality of life for Edmonton’s seniors. Provincial government policies and funding impact how these issues are addressed in the community.

The provincial election campaign is a good opportunity to ask politicians what their plans are to ensure seniors’ issues are addressed. The Edmonton Seniors Coordinating Council has developed a Seniors Issues Primer to help seniors ask informed questions. We encourage you to provide this resource to seniors.

Collaborating for Financial Literacy
There is great momentum building in Canada to improve the knowledge, skills and confidence of Canadians to make responsible financial decisions. In April 2014, the Government of Canada appointed Ms. Jane Rooney as Canada’s first Financial Literacy Leader to direct the development of a National Strategy.

In her first year as Financial Literacy Leader, Ms. Rooney gained tremendous insight into the needs of particular groups including seniors and ‘future’ seniors, Canadians with low-incomes, Aboriginal peoples, newcomers, and youth and adults. Find out what she has learned and how she has laid the building blocks for a national strategy will help Canadians to become more financially literate.
ESCC members are asked to RSVP by April 16 by contacting Katie at admin@seniorscouncil.net or 780-428-3660.

If you are not an ESCC member, but would like to attend our AGM, you are welcome to register.

Seniors sector professional development

At the request of our members, ESCC has organized a professional development session for staff of Edmonton seniors organizations. We heard from members that it was not financially feasible for individual organizations to bring in speakers and they wondered if ESCC could coordinate something on behalf of the sector.

ESCC is delighted to present:
