We hope everyone had a great Spring Holiday! The calendar is filling up fast with some great events. Open Farm dates for Cedarock Historical Farm have been announced, the junior Cane Pole Fishing Hole Derby will take place in May, and the Haw River Trail's Yee Haw! River Paddle is just around the corner. Special Olympics' Spring Games are on the 24th, and Pleasant Grove Community Center is hosting a Star Party the same evening. We are also proud to share that Alamance County's Little League program has received a sponsorship from Dick's Sporting Goods. PG Summer Camp registration has opened, and that's not all...read on for details!

Historical Farm "Open Farm" Days

The Cedarock Park Historical Farm will be open for public viewing on select Saturdays, 11:00am-3:00pm. Open Farm days include demonstrations of farm life during the late 19th century. Upcoming dates are April 11th & 25th and May 9th & 23rd. Additional dates can be found in the newsletter calendar below.

This year we will be featuring special programs on several Open Farm days starting in May, through a partnership with Alamance County Public Libraries. More on that next month!

Cane Pole Fishing Hole Derby!

You bring the poles, we bring the worms. The junior Cane Pole Fishing Hole Derby is coming up May 16th, 10am-1pm. Kids will be divided into two age groups for the contest: 5-7 and 8-12 year olds. For both age groups, prizes will be awarded to the kid who catches the biggest fish, and the one who catches the most fish- a special prize is available if someone catches both the biggest and the most!

The challenge- only cane poles are allowed for the event. You are encouraged to bring your own poles; we have a limited number available on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is free and registration is not required. You may show up anytime during the 10am-1pm window, and stay for as long as you want.

Benefit Ride at Cedarock

The Ellen Tobin Memorial Fund Benefit Ride will take place at Cedarock Park on Saturday, April 18, 9am-1pm, to honor the memory of Ellen Tobin, 22-year-old trainer and manager at Woodlawn Stables of Mebane, NC, and mentor of many young equestrians. Proceeds from the benefit will fund scholarships for the NC Therapeutic Riding Center, St. Andrews University of Laurinburg, and for young people with a passion for horses who are unable to afford lessons.

The entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for 18 & under. Up-to-date Coggins is required. Registration is not required, but you may RSVP to the event and find more information on the Ellen Tobin Memorial Fund Benefit Ride Facebook event page.
The Haw River Trail Partnership is holding the 8th annual Yee-Haw! River Paddle on May 9th. The Yee-Haw! River Paddle brings together paddlers of all skill levels to share the Haw River as a community. Proceeds support the Haw River Trail.

This year’s paddle includes a Family & Beginners’ Paddle in the morning at Indian Valley Paddle Access, featuring calm, flat water ideal for new beginners. The Yee-Haw! River Paddle in the afternoon will follow the stretch of river from Shallow Ford Paddle Access to Indian Valley Paddle Access. This 4-mile section is appropriate for all skill levels and features seven Class I rapids.

Registration is $20 per adult and $10 for kids 12 & under. The Family & Beginners’ Paddle will feature free boat rental sponsored by the participating outfitters. For the afternoon paddle, participants should arrange boat rentals in advance with one of the outfitters.

For more information and to register, please visit the Haw River Trail website (thehaw.org).
The Special Olympics Spring Games are almost here! They will be held April 24th at Elon, 9:30am-1:30pm. During the Games, each athlete is paired with a volunteer to be their buddy for the day. Volunteers need to arrive at 8:30am.

After opening ceremonies, there will be rotations through a softball throw and a run. Other activities include Olypmic Town, which hosts tables of games and activities like finger painting, as well as additional games sponsored by the Elon physical therapy department. Special Olympics of North Carolina also has a station offering free medical screening for the athletes- every athlete who stops by for a screening will take home a special prize!

We still need volunteers- you can sign up to volunteer through our SurveyMonkey form or contact Special Populations Coordinator Steve Glahn at 336-570-6760 or steve.glahn@alamance-nc.com.

Pleasant Grove Recreation Center will be hosting the North Carolina Science Festival’s annual Statewide Star Party on Friday, April 24th at 6:30 pm.  Join us for an evening of fun and stargazing! Free and open to the public.

There will be snacks and Solar System-themed activities and crafts, followed by stargazing to start around 8pm (weather permitting). Astronomers will bring telescopes and star guides to share with attendees and lead the stargazing.

Summer Camp Expo Recap

This year’s Summer Camp & Safe Kids Expo, held in conjunction with Wellness Committee & Safe Kids Coalition, was a great success. Over 300 children and their families joined in the fun with 50 vendors on hand including camps, health and safety agencies. Every child received a door prize and our new Kids Zone included face painting, crafts, games, and more. There were also Safe Kids activities from the Burlington Fire Department, NC Highway Patrol, and Bike Safety Rodeo, and games sponsored by Nationwide, and Operation Medicine Drop with the Burlington Police Department. Thanks to all of our sponsors and vendors for making this year such a great event!

Dick's Sporting Goods Sponsors Alamance County Little League

We’d like to share the great news that Dick’s Sporting Goods is a sponsor for the 2015 Alamance County Little League Season. Through this one-year sponsorship, Dick’s is providing baseball, softball, and Tee-ball supplies, as well as coaching supplies such as scorebooks. We thank Dick’s for their generous support of our athletic programs!

The Alamance County Little League Season began on April 20th. Teams were picked and practices started a couple weeks before, and play is now underway.

The 84th Uncle Eli's Quilting Party

The Eli Whitney Recreation Center hosted the 84th Uncle Eli's Quilting Party last Thursday. Area quilters and residents brought quilts to display and projects to work on together. A community quilt was available for attendees to try their hand at quilting, and an impressive display of antique ladies' bonnets (originals and replicas) graced the center display. Quilts of all kinds, from patchwork to trapunto, old and new, covered the gym wall to wall. Another interesting highlight was a booth sharing information about Alamance plaids, which originated as part of Alamance County's rich textile heritage.

VIP Putt-Putt Tournament

On March 28th, the 12 members of the VIP program attended the visually impaired putt-putt tournament in Salisbury. It was a chilly day but everyone had lots of fun!

Volunteer Opportunities

We are always looking for volunteers to help with various projects. Examples of some projects include invasive plant removal at Cedarock Park and other locations; help with booths/presentations at special events; and trail work days. We are also looking for a photographer or photography student willing to volunteer their skills to document some of our parks and events. If you are interested in learning more about these opportunities, please contact Katie Gensel at (336) 229-2230. We appreciate your support!
