Global Health Leaders Applaud the Government of Jamaica’s Tobacco Control Efforts

Leading global public health organisations have submitted a letter to Hon. PM Portia Simpson Miller congratulating the Government of Jamaica for working to meet its moral and legal obligations to protect its citizens’ health by enacting and enforcing strong tobacco control policies. Jamaica demonstrated its commitment to action when it ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2005.
The HCC joins these global CSOs in congratulating the Gov’t of Jamaica for its leadership and steadfast commitment to tobacco control. HCC Member, the Jamaica Coalition for Tobacco Control (JCTC), has been working with the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, for many years to create a tobacco-free Jamaica and the HCC commends them for their courage and dedication to this urgent public health cause.

JCTC representatives noted that there is currently a national media campaign to discredit the tobacco control work of the Ministry of Health and its Minister, Dr. Fenton Ferguson. Sections of the media are either calling for his resignation or for the Prime Minister to remove him from his current portfolio.

|
Additionally, the Opposition party have been weighing in on the matter. This campaign began with the Minister’s announcement of his intentions to go ahead with comprehensive tobacco control legislation. The campaign is using health issues as a guise under which to ask for the Minister’s removal.
The global health community, the HCC and the JCTC are in full support of the Minister and the Ministry of Health as they move forward with comprehensive tobacco control legislation.

Free oral cancer screenings was offered by dentists on April 1 as part of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s education outreach efforts. People began lining up for their 5 minute pain free screening long before the clinics were opened for business. Nine clinics took part in mouth and throat cancer screenings. Waiting rooms at some clinics were packed with people throughout the day. At the end of business day, 200 people were screened and with 1 clinic committing to continue screening throughout the month, we expect the numbers to increase significantly.

“Oral cancer is a new topic for us in Cayman, and fortunately our dentists answered our calls for help in raising awareness of this rarely discussed, but fairly common, cancer,” said Jennifer Weber, operations manager at the Cancer Society. “Dr. Keelin Fox, who spearheaded the Cayman screening initiative, was involved in the inaugural Irish Oral Cancer screening day in 2011, and screened a man who was later diagnosed with both oral and lung cancer. He made a full recovery, due in part to early detection. “This had a profound effect on me,” said Dr. Fox, “and highlighted to me that dentists have an important role to play in the early detection and prevention of this disease.”

HCC Encourages You to Contribute to WHO/USAID/World Bank Public Consultation
The World Health Organization, USAID, and World Bank have launched a public consultation on Health Measurement and Accountability for Post-2015: A Common Roadmap. The Roadmap articulates an approach to support effective measurement and accountability systems for health and ensure that countries have what they need to plan, manage and measure their health programs, as well as monitor and achieve their national health goals and the health SDGs. The final version of the document is expected to be launched at a Summit in Washington, DC, June 9-11. The authors are accepting feedback on the current draft via the website until April 15. Stakeholder feedback on the indicators for the SDGs in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

On 19 March 2015, a technical report was released by the Bureau of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) on the process of the development of an indicator framework for the goals and targets of the post-2015 development agenda: read it here. Non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and organizations participating in the Major Groups may contribute assessment of the draft indicators by completing the online form here. Breast cancer risk test devised in 77-gene analysis
Scientists have predicted the odds of women developing breast cancer by looking for tiny errors in their DNA. The international team analysed 77 genes. Individually they each had a low impact on cancer risk, but were a powerful combination. The findings, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, could eventually transform screening, preventive treatments and even HRT. Read more
