Enter Your Business Plan for Mark Ain Competition by April 15

Submit your business plans to the ninth annual Mark Ain Business Model Competition. First place will win $10,000; second place will receive $2,500; and third place will get $1,000. A team of up to five students may submit one plan and students may submit a business plan that was written for a current or past course. Submissions must be submitted electronically to Susanna Virgilio at the Center for Entrepreneurship by 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15. Ten semi-finalist teams will be selected to present their business plans on April 30. From the semi-finalist presentations, the pool will be whittled down to five finalist teams who will have a chance to win the cash prizes during the competition on May 13. KEY Capstone Presentations: 4/14

Learn how Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year (KEY) Scholars spent a fifth year in Rochester transforming ideas into enterprises that create value during their capstone presentations on Tuesday, April 14 at 1:00 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, room 407 (fourth floor). The University community and general public are welcome to attend and may stop in at any time.


Entrepreneur-in-Residence Office Hours

Seeking advice from a seasoned entrepreneur? Take advantage of the University of Rochester Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIRs) program. Gregg Steinberg, managing director of Charlemagne Global Advisory and serial entrepreneur, will hold office hours on Monday, April 13 from noon to 5 p.m. and Tuesday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All April office hours will be held in 3-131 Carol Simon Hall (3rd floor). Eastman Webinar: So You Think You Know about Artist Management?: 4/14

Join Polyphonic.org on Tuesday, April 14 at 8 p.m. EST for a virtual interview and discussion with Nancy Christensen, founder and president of Christensen Arts, LLC, an artist management firm based in New York City. As a musician, what should you know about artist management? When does it make sense to consider management, what are the benefits, and how does one go about starting the process? We will get Nancy's expertise on these questions. We will also talk with Nancy about her career path, how she developed her career in artist management, and what advice she has for aspiring artist managers. UR Ventures Lecture on Software and Open Source Software: 4/14

Join UR Ventures on Tuesday, April 14 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons for “Software and Open Source Software.” Reid Cunningham, Intellectual Property Attorney at UR Ventures, will lead a practical presentation on how to best use software, understand licensing terms, avoid infringement, and more. UR Community: Apply to the NSF I-Corps Site Training and Grant Program

Got a technical business idea? Students at any level of study, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited to apply to Cohort I of the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Site program at the University of Rochester. The program provides entrepreneurial training (two required workshops) and modest funding ($1,000 to $3,000 grant awards) to enable teams to transition their technical idea into the marketplace. Cohort I will take place during the 2015 fall semester. Applicationmaterials, including an Itemized Financial Plan on how the funds will be used, are due Monday, April 20 at noon via email to natalie.antal@rochester.edu. Congrats to UR Teams Advancing to the Statewide NY Business Plan Competition

On Wednesday night, 12 University of Rochester teams competed in the semi-finalist presentation round of the third annual 2015 Finger Lakes Regional Contest of the New York Business Plan Competition. Two University of Rochester teams: Cλ (Seth Reining ’15 (MS in TEAM); Anthony Yee ’15 (MS in TEAM) and PhD candidate in optics; Xiangzhi Yu, PhD candidate in Mechanical Engineering; and Yang Zhao, PhD candidate in optics) and Cataract Innovations (Brian Ayers ’16 (MBA) and MD candidate; Eryn Fennig, PhD candidate in optics; and Sarah Walters ’15 (MS in TEAM) and PhD candidate in optics) were selected as finalists. Twelve finalist teams (in addition to the two from the UR, three were from RIT, five were from Geneseo, and two from Hobart and William Smith College) from the Finger Lakes Region will advance to the statewide intercollegiate New York Business Plan Competition in Albany on April 24, where they will vie for $500,000 in cash and in-kind prizes.

Greater Rochester Entrepreneurship Conference: 4/11

The SPARK Entrepreneurs undergraduate club invites everyone in the region to attend the inaugural Greater Rochester Entrepreneurship Conference featuring the Wegmans Challenge on Saturday, April 11 in Schlegel and Gleason Halls on the University of Rochester River Campus. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. The conference will include speakers and panelists such as Richard Glaser, Senior Financial Advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management; Sharon Napier, CEO and founder of Partners + Napier; and Tim Talley, founder of U-Lace; and breakout sessions, lunch and networking, and a real-world business challenge from Wegmans Food Markets. The challenge is open to undergraduates only and offers thousands of dollars in prizes including GoPro HERO4 cameras. The event, open to the general public, ends at 9:00 p.m. with a networking session. Visit the website to learn more and register online. A small registration fee applies for graduate students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Undergraduates from any institution in the greater Rochester area may register for free.


Tibetan Cultural Performance and Dialogue Events: 4/11

Tashi Delek!: Tibetan Cultural Entertainment
(Hosted by ADITI at the University of Rochester)
Date and Time: Saturday, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: Hirst Lounge
This event will showcase Tibetan culture through series of performances done by Tibetan performers from New York City and New Jersey. It will also showcase a performance by the members of the Bhutanese/Nepali community and the University's very own Rochester Raas. The media outlets Voice of America and Radio Free Asia will be filming and covering the event.

The Future of Tibet Dialogue
(Hosted by the Department of History)
Date and Time: Saturday, April 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. 
Location: Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library
This event will feature panelists who will discuss the past, present, and the future state of Tibet. It will mainly focus on the idea of the Middle Way Approach (proposed by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government-in-exile), which recognizes that Tibet is part of China and proposes a genuine autonomy in accordance to the Chinese Constitution. This is a proposal that is believed to be the most agreeable proposal among the Chinese and the Tibetan community, according to scholars from China and abroad. The panelists will talk about the Middle Way Approach and at the same time project a message of peaceful dialogue and cooperation among all communities. Panelists include:

  • Professor Ming Xia from CUNY-Staten Island, an expert in Chinese government and affairs)
  • Dhardon Sharling, Member of the Parliament, Tibetan Government-In-Exile, Dharamsala, India
  • Bhuchung Tsering, fomer envoy member of the Task Force sent by the Dalai Lama to Beijing for official negotiations from 2002 to 2011
  • Representative from the Office of Tibet

2015 University Technology Showcase: 4/16

Attend the 2015 University Technology Showcase! This year’s event will be held Thursday, April 16 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1111 Jefferson Road, Rochester, NY from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. The showcase’s poster session is an opportunity for university researchers to present their work to industry as well as other researchers and organizations that promote economic development. The objective is to stimulate discussions that may lead to industry-university collaboration. View the list of abstracts and universities represented at the event.

WISE Symposium: 4/21

Register today for the 2015 WISE (Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship) Symposium to be held Tuesday, April 21 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The one-day symposium—attended by 1,000 women—includes an extensive variety of seminars and panel discussions offering practical advice covering topics from all aspects of the business world; motivational speeches from local and nationally-known successful women business owners; many networking opportunities; a business expo; and much more. Online registration in advance is required: $20 for full-time students and $100 for the general public.
