chieftain’s message

I am sitting at my desk writing this on Easter weekend whilst trying to work out how we can be in April already…

It certainly seems to be true that time flies by faster the older you get and that has never felt more true than now as I consider that in three short weeks I’ll be reaching the end of my year as Chieftain of the Singapore St Andrew’s Society.

Please do come along to our AGM at the British Club on April 24th to vote in your new Chieftain and committee, and to join us for a rooftop BBQ. The location is quite lovely & you feel very far away indeed from the hustle & bustle of everyday city life.

Needless to say the Chieftain may change but our regular events carry on, so hope to see you at dancing or at our family Ceilidh on 16th May.

Finally, I am very excited to announce that our fabulous new website is up and running. I love it and hope you do too! Check it out at www.standrewssociety.org.sg and let us know what you think!

SSAS Chieftain 2014/2015

The Society has a rather lovely tartan to its name (see the header and footer of this message) and although we have the lightweight tartan in Singapore, the cold-climate version needs weaving in Scotland.

If you fancy a new kilt for this year’s ball or just want a new kilt, please get in touch and we’ll put in an order for the cloth. It costs £58.33 (plus VAT) per metre, and a kilt requires 3.7 metres. One of our members has been quoted £250 (plus VAT) to make up the kilt, so we can put you in touch with the same kilt makers.

Edringtons Whisky Tasting Review by Derek Maggs

Edringtons graciously sponsored a prize that SSAS auctioned at the Burns' supper. It was billed as a whisky tasting for 10 people. Not much to go on but, since I was the lucky winner, I hoped it would be good.

The date was finally set for Maunday Thursday and despite some last minute changes in personnel, nine folk found their way to the Edringtons' swanky offices in the heart of the financial district.

The evening could not have been much better. Edringtons' very knowledgeable Alvin Tan and Kelly Tan were excellent hosts. We were greeted with some Old Fashioneds except the sugar was replaced with honey and the bourbon with Highland Park 12YO. It is arguable whether the first went down better than the second or...

Thankfully, there were plates of meat, cheeses, pate to help tickle the oiled palates, because next up was the Highland Park 12YO followed swiftly by their Dark Origins expression; more than a hint of Magnus Eunson's dark past.

We switched distilleries and headed south to Macallan where we tried the 18YO and 25YO. Opinion over which of these was best was divided equally between the nine of us since we had lost the ability to count to three by this stage.

Simon, one of our crew, spotted an orange object (labelled with the Macallan brand) that makes spherical ice cubes from a block of ice in about 30-40 seconds. Retailing at a purported £1,500, there was still some interest for this novelty.

Alvin then opened the bar and we were offered pretty much anything there. This included a whisky-based ginger liqueur from Holland and some rare malt from The Macallan.

Before we left, our hosts provided each of us with a Highland Park miniature 18YO. Not sure how many made it home intact.

We rolled out down to the lobby at some point and made our way home – happy Easter bunnies.
