New SIG: Content-Based Instruction

The new Content-Based Instruction Special Interest Group (CBI-SIG) welcomes teachers at all levels. This group is specifically designed for teachers who are teaching content in the classroom; for example, someone who teaches science at an immersion school, someone who teaches film in English at their university, or someone whose hagwon specializes in SAT preparation or U.S. high school preparation.

What can people expect from the CBI-SIG? Well, that depends on what members want. The SIG is already planning presentations at the National and International Conferences, and articles on CBI are in the works for publication in The English Connection. Interested members can learn more about the SIG and join the mailing list here, or they can find SIG facilitator Phillip Schrank at the National Conference to talk informally about the SIG.

Panel Proposals Wanted for 2015 International Conference

The 2015 International Conference Program Committee invites interested members to submit panel proposals for the October conference. The panel should consist of a moderator and two or three other participants who have an informed opinion on a topic. Topics can include anything in the field of ELT that is relevant and that would stimulate a thought-provoking, nuanced discussion. Each panelist will offer her/his view and interact/react to the other panelists. Audience participation is also possible.

Panel proposals must be submitted by May 31. Additional information is available here.

Reminder: KOTESOL Membership Dues to Rise

Remember, if you're planning to join or renew your membership, or if you have ever considered taking out a Lifetime Membership, now is the time to do it! Membership dues rates are scheduled to change on July 1, 2015. Designed to cover the rising costs of operation, this is the first membership dues increase since 1998.

New membership dues rates as of July 1:
  • Regular 1-year membership: 50,000 won (currently 40,000)
  • International membership: 70,000 won (currently 60,000 won)
  • Student membership: 30,000 won (currently 20,000 won)
  • Lifetime membership: 500,000 won (currently 400,000 won)
The current membership fees will remain in effect for individuals joining or renewing as part of their International Conference registration during the Early Bird registration period (July 1-31, 2015). Note that you can renew before your membership expires; the extension will be added to the end of your current membership term.

Additional information about the rate changes can be found online.
