Hello!
I am currently working on volume 03 of Typograph.Journal and I want to showcase more talent from our community. So I am inviting submissions for experimental, innovative, playful, beautiful letterforms A-Z. (Upper or lowercase latin). The competition runs until midnight May 7th (AEDT). With winners to be announced on May 8th.

26 letters (A-Z) will be chosen and published (black and white) in the next volume of Typograph.Journal along with their maker/creator/designers name, insta account and website (website is optional). As well as having your work published winners will also receive a complimentary (and limited edition) copy of volume 03 once it is printed.

This Saturday (May 2nd) I am hosting an experimental letterpress workshop at Designworks.

There are spots available for this weekends Get Inky masterclass. In this hands on workshop participants will learn about the history and tradition of letterpress before we discuss a number of more abstract and contemporary typographic concepts. We then explore a brief which enables participants to bring the theory and practice together - by handsetting both metal and woodtype in experimental layouts before getting hands on with Designworks Farley proof press to create their own printed outcome from the day. These sessions are always great fun and you will take home your final print along with a bound workbook of notes and thinking from the days session. (Details and booking here).

Typism.

I came home from our adventures overseas just in time to head down to the gold coast for this years Typism conference - which was (unsurprisingly) amazing - I will do a more comprehensive wrap up of the event in a future post (when I can source some of the beautiful imagery talented photographer Camille Santiago captured on the day)... but I wanted to share with you some of the highlights from the speaker presentations.

  • Dave Foster explained letters are the 'lego blocks' civilization is built out of.
  • Carla Hackett uses 'making as meditation' and explained that good lettering takes practice and 'brush mileage'.
  • Out of this world letterer Jess Cruickshank words of wisdom included 'constantly experiment' and 'the internet does not equal reality'.
  • Barry Spencer blew my mind by demonstrating how far letters can travel when there is no legacy/historical expectation towards form and recognition.
  • Jamie Clarke took us on an evolutionary journey from being the head of a digital design agency to growing personally and professionally through (analogue) creative side projects and passionate practice.
  • Jasmine Dowling described how 'anyone can replicate your style but as a creative nobody can take your process'. 
  • Finally Luke Lucas shared his prolific body of work reminding us to avoid being typecast by mixing it up with creative process and media.
I recently backed this project on Kickstarter and I think all of you typophiles with an interest in Letterpress will want to see this project realised. Pressing On is a documentary examining the relevance of a physical process that is anything but modern! This crowd funded documentary has really affordable backer rewards so please check it out and show your support.

For centuries, creating beautiful typography required chiseling tiny steel blocks—the very best type-makers could carve about two letters a day. These clever letter-making stamps aren’t exactly chiseling steel, but Instamp is a set of alphabetical rubber stamps and ink pads from Japanese designer Yuzo Azu that lets you create an infinite number of custom typefaces just by adjusting the angle and pressure of your hand.

More Letterpress Lust in video form - from SquareEyePrinting - in this video they talk to Nick from 'The Print Project' - Nick is a letterpress printer based in West Yorkshire (UK) that's finding new ways to use centuries-old technology.
Old School New School has launched a new program called 'First Dimension - Drawing for Typographers'. With the first of two sessions starting on Thursday June 4. This drawing course is exciting and different, because the skills it brings are uniquely Typographic. It will help you think about Type differently, and it will re energise your practice as a Typographer and Designer. Check out all the details here.
This 'Flowchart: How To Choose A Typeface' examines 43 typefaces and the selection criteria/decision-making process on how to pick an appropriate font... Once you really understand them, typefaces can be powerful. A properly chosen font can either give your words authority, or totally undermine them. Even a typeface as openly reviled as Comic Sans, which is ludicrous in the context of an email from your boss or as the typeface on a business card, can be extraordinarily powerful in the right context.

Resistenza (est.2008) is a collaboration between typographer/calligrapher Giuseppe Salerno and graphic designer Paco Gonzalez. Resistenza specializes in type-design, branding, calligraphy and lettering. They have a bumper portfolio of custom and commission work (packed with beautiful typographic forms) and also are retailing typefaces through libraries such as MyFonts (and their own website). I am a big fan of the work these guys are doing. Their website is super sexy with great dynamic type integration. Check it out!

Professor Hongtao Zhou recent project, "Textscapes," consists of a 3D font that reads like text, but can be viewed like sculpture. Hongtao's font brings text to life, turning subject matter concerning landscapes, cities or figures into visual aberrations that actually appear like architectural pieces. A letter becomes a city, a story becomes abstract sculptures. Printing during Imperial times resulted in a beautifully carved block, while Hongtao's 3D printing results in "Textscapes."

This new publication from Lawrence king curates an alphabet of Alan kitchings favourite letterforms.
