We have some exciting updates on our first projects for 2015! From greenhouses to baby cows, please take a moment to read updates on our sustainable projects that you made happen, and that are improving the quality of life for our partner children living in orphanages.

Our Greenhouses Are Up!

The Fiwagoh Greenhouse in Nakuru, Kenya is our largest project so far, with an investment of $25,000 providing an installation of 6 greenhouses on the home’s property.  We anticipate huge returns from the greenhouses that will greatly affect the quality of life for the children residing at the home. This income generating project involves the selling of the produce grown in the greenhouses to wholesale partners in local markets. Profits will be used to hire two greatly needed house-mothers for the home, which will increase the adult-child ratio and provide love and emotional support.  Additionally, the project will alleviate the homes’ dry food costs by 83% annually. But most importantly, these children deserve to have a committed staff and the opportunity to create bonds with their caretakers- and thanks to your support for this greenhouse, they will!

Our second greenhouse project in Kenya is a set up of one greenhouse at the Watoto Wema home. This income generating project is focused on providing fresh vegetables and secondary education the children. The greenhouse will allocate 40% of the vegetables produced to the children’s diets, as they currently can only afford a grain based diet with very little vegetables. The remaining 60% of produce will be sold in local markets to fund the older children’s education, which is not free in Kenya.

The installation at both homes was a smooth process and was assisted with support and training by our partner suppliers, Amiran LTD, the number one greenhouse supplier for small farmers in Kenya. Training for the farm manager and laborers was provided, and the soil was tested before any seeding. Good thing it was, as the soil at both homes wasn’t quite ready. However, they have since been dutifully tilling the soil and they hope to have crops growing in the next month!
Baby Cows at The Flying Kites Home in Njabini, Kenya!

Flying Kites Home welcomes a baby cow and have another on the way! These newborn calves are a welcome addition to the cow family that provides nutritious, organic milk and yogurt to the children at the home and the children enrolled at the partner school. Keeping in line with our eco-friendly mission, our dairy cows are simultaneously a functioning biogas project. The cows’ manure is used to make fuel for cooking, which saves the home from having to spend money on propane tanks for fuel, and the waste from the biogas production is returned to the soil as fertilizer. Ms. Wambui, the country director of the home, says that the project is going strong and she is happy that the new calves will help to further reduce energy costs and keep the milk flowing.

We are off to a great start for 2015, and want to thank you for your continued support in helping us create long term improvements in the quality of life for our partner children.
On deck we have new projects in India, including a chicken farm and a solar installation - please read more information here, where you can also invest in these projects. We’ll also be releasing additional projects at the end of the second quarter, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated. Thank you so much for making these projects possible! We can’t wait to see what other great transformations for our partner children we can bring about together in 2015!
