COMPETITIONS

NEW
First Annual Contest for Architecture Grads. Design of a contemporary residential building, one level, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, attached garage and total area no greater than 2,000 sf. Floor plan and at least one rendering required for entry. 1st prize is $1,500 and professional photography. Submission deadline July 31, 2015

The Fentress Global Challenge is an international design competition created to engage students worldwide in the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. The competition theme changes each year to reflect current issues. For 2015, students around the globe are invited to imagine The Airport of the Future. Register by Friday, May 1, 2015

The Leicester B. Holland Prize is an annual competition that recognizes the best single-sheet measured drawing of an historic building, site, or structure prepared by an individual(s) to the standards of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), or the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). The prize is supported by the Paul Rudolph Trust, American Institute of Architects, and the Center for Architecture, Design & Engineering in the Library of Congress, and administered by the Heritage Documentation Programs of the National Park Service (HABS/HAER/HALS). ARCHmedium is proud to announce its 18th architectural competition "Ohrid Watersports Club" for students and young graduates. Submission deadline is June 15, 2015 (by mid-night London time)
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) of the National Park Service, The Athenaeum of Philadelphia and The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announce the 2015 Charles E. The Beaux-Arts Academy has returned to the same program offered 350 years ago by the Ecole des Beaux - Arts in Paris. Students will learn the classical traditions passed down for centuries in the ‘one room school house’ model. This is a full time immersion program from 9am - 6pm, five days a week. We have a Four Year Classical Art School and a One Year Classical Architecture & Design Certification Program. The architecture and design students will spend two terms in Italy learning from the works of the great masters. These terms are optional for the four year art students. The 2015 AIA/F Diversity Advancement Scholarship provides assistance to high school graduates, college freshmen, and community college students from a minority and/or financially disadvantaged background who intend to pursue a NAAB-accredited professional degree in Architecture. A professional degree is either a 5-year Bachelor of Architecture degree or a 4+2 pre-professional Bachelor degree followed by a Master of Architecture degree. Application deadline is April 22, 2015

STUDIO NORTH is a six day intensive building workshop. The workshop offers students the opportunity to engage with the rural landscape and to imagine, develop and construct inventive design solutions. An architectural education is best experienced through engagement in all aspects of the building process.
 The workshop takes place in Norwich, Vermont. Each session investigates a particular interest and responds with the design and construction of a complete prototype structure. The workshop is limited to ten students.
 Apply - Studio North is currently seeking applicants for the workshop of June 7 – 13 , 2015. The workshop is open to interested students of all abilities. Previous construction experience is not required.  Housing during Studio North is offered at a group rate at The Hotel Coolidge in White River Junction, VT. Apply by May 7, 2015

More about what is happening in the lobby this week....
   On Wednesday
and Thursday Michael Ermann’s second year Architecture studio will pin up their work in the 2nd Floor Cowgill Lobby on a mixed-use consulate slot building in New York City. The work focuses on space, the overhead plane, questioning defaults (particularly pancake stacking and aperture design), the urban, and solar geometry.
   Studio Collective is a journal produced by students from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, aiming to expand conversations about design. Our third volume examines layering through interviews and essays from students, faculty and alumni. As an archive of student work, it offers a unique glimpse into life within our school. Volume III will be featured in the Cowgill lobby from May 1st-4th, and on May 4th journals can be purchased for $10, along with t-shirts and posters.

 
TODAY!
Join students from the School of Architecture+ Design for a night of handmade bowls and soup!  April 27th at 6pm in Hillcrest Hall Dining Room, on the Virginia Tech campus. For just $10, you get to pick out a handmade bowl and enjoy a delicious soup.  When you leave, take your empty bowl home as a reminder of all those who go hunger or suffer from food insecurities.  All proceeds raised will go to Micah's Backpack. This great nonprofit organization addresses children's hunger issues by partnering with local schools to provide direct assistance to students. Each week during the school year, students receive a backpack filled with enough food for the weekend. The backpacks include two dinners, two lunches and two breakfasts. facebook event page

Congratulations to Rachel Montague, 5th year Architecture student, for being chosen among 10 students to present their undergraduate research and scholarship at the 10th annual ACC Meeting of the Minds Conference, hosted at NC State on April 10-12, 2015. Her faculty mentor is Elizabeth Grant, assistant professor of architecture and design. Her research is titled, “Trust and choice in the learning environment: Student Center for At-Risk Students in Beckley, West Virginia.” Rachel thought the conference was a fantastic opportunity for undergraduates from different colleges in the ACC to meet each other and share their stories and research with one another. more
