Your Weekly Dose of Uptown Love!

There is light at the end of the tunnel. The 191st Street Tunnel that is. The long-neglected 900 foot pedestrian tunnel that connects Broadway with the 1 train and St. Nicholas Ave is getting a much-needed makeover. Shout out to the New York City Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Art Program for selecting such a stellar group of artists to transform the walkway. Internationally known Graffiti King, Cope 2, as well as Andrea von Bujdoss (Queen Andrea), Nick Kuszyk, Nelson Rivas Cekis, and art duo Jessie Unterhalter and Katey Truhn will have their own sections of the tunnel to beautify. The work is scheduled to begin the week of May 11th. Can’t wait to see the results…

The proverbial Uptown Love that we are always talking about was in full effect at the Onward And Upward Benefit shindig that was held at District 12 on April 20th. We as a community came together to support the wonderful work of the Up Theater Company and had a damn good time. Attendees were treated to a sneak peak of Epic Poetry, which opens at the Hebrew Tabernacle on April 29th as well as a raffle and auction that boasted some serious prizes. I cannot overstate how proud I am to have been given the Upstanding Person of the Year Award. I see it as vindication of our work as well as fuel to keep spreading and preaching the Uptown gospel.

Mike Vaccaro penned an excellent article in the NY Post about the Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Little League and how much Washington Heights has changed since Mr. Buczek was killed in the line of duty in 1988. The neighborhood march that kicks off every season is a sight to behold.

Local artist, Andrea Arroyo, is the co-founder and curator of Tribute to the Disappeared, which is an art project in honor of the disappeared in Mexico. It is a stirring homage to the 43 missing students in Ayotzinapa and the women of Juarez as well as all the victims of violence and injustice around the globe.

Get used to the name Wesley Rodriguez because you might start hearing it quite often. The George Washington High School pitcher is slinging straight fire with pitches that have been clocked at 98 mph. James Wilkins of the NY Daily News gave us the lowdown on a pitcher that is also a menace with the bat. I think I hear the Majors a calling…
