Brooklyn, NY - STooPS has presented art outside and connected Bed-Stuy neighbors, homeowners, artists, and businesses for 3 years. As we prepare for our 3rd annual event we're excited to welcome new artists AND share the work of creatives who have become integral members of the STooPS family. We are so excited to share these artists with the Bed-Stuy community for another year!

Aleijuan is a Brooklyn based artist, and storyteller. He is the only son of southern-born, African-American parents who raised him on christian schools, female-led households, and pentecostal churches. 'Flight of the Dandelion’ is a theater work-in-progress that redefines, and re-imagines how afro-masculinity is experienced, and navigated through a modern day lens.
Àṣẹ Dance Theatre Collective is a professional, neo-folkloric performance ensemble that specializes in Dance Theater from the African Diaspora. Under the artistic direction of its founder, Adia Tamar Whitaker, a dancer/choreographer and vocalist from San Francisco, this Brooklyn-based dance theater collective is dedicated to preserving the past, present & future of the African presence in the “New World”.
Autumn Scoggan holds her Bachelors of Arts in Dance and Women’s Studies from Kansas State University and has always had a great passion for choreographing, entertaining, and social activism.
CHRIS WISE is a hip-hop artist from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. To be exact, he represents the Ebbets Field Apartments where he spent his entire childhood, and where Jackie Robinson once ran the bases. Chris will construct a multimedia art space that includes a live musical performance, an art gallery featuring some of his photography, and a mini-market of artworks.
In viewing Denrick Johnson (Sebek Heru)’s free form expressions we see the tales of his creative spirit as it seeks balance within Divinity and the Black Experience. His presentation will be a participatory showing of my work and creative process. He will construct an interactive experience for visitors to explore select works and fragments of my life’s journey as it has influenced my creative practice.
Emily Caffery is the artistic director of Platea Theater Project, a Brooklyn theater artist, an alumna of the National Theater Institute, and previously an actor/director/public-policy-researcher in Michigan. Join Platea Theater Project for a joyful celebration of the BedStuy community with a short play inspired by the traditions of commedia dell’arte street theater.
frederic TAIEB has been working for 7 years in Finance. He decided 2 years ago to leave that world and to explorer his artistic side, which has been blocked for a long time. frederic will continue the mural he began during STooPS 2014.
Geminelle is one of the greatest examples of what happens when faith meets fortitude. The San Diego native Geminelle has been pursuing music at a professional level since the age of 13. Geminelle creates her entire sound from the ground up using a loop pedal, ukulele, and soulful vocals, inviting her audience to be a part of the music making process.
International teaching artist and storyteller, Gustav Gauntlett has been combining basketball with community work for over a decade. He will perform one of the characters from my 1-man show called Hoops, winner of the BEST PLAY award at the 2014 Downtown Urban Theater Festival.
Born and raised in BedStuy, Brooklyn, Ish began making waves as a teenager in the youth spoken word and poetry scene. He also started creating music at the same time in a duo called HumUni (hyoom-you-nigh). Ish will expand on what he started at STooPS 2014. By STooPS 2015, his full album, Store Run, will be released and in rotation.
Native Sun Musik is a UK based Afro-soul Hiphop duo comprising of Mozambique born rapper Mohammed Yahya and singer song writer & fashion designer Sarina Mantle. Xtatic Samuelz is a female Kenyan rapper who is effortlessly raising the flag for African rap being a real contender on the world stage. The Flowerbird/Afrikan Hiphop art & performance is a series of revolutionary murals, poetry, installations, fashion, photography & music that will increase awareness on nature’s interconnectedness.
Maxine Montilus has performed with Ase Dance Theatre Collective, Balasole Dance Company, KaNu Dance Theater and Tamara LaDonna Moving Spirits. Using text, song and movement, “Return to Play” will be based on the idea of remembering what we enjoyed as children to help audiences – particularly adults – remember the value of indulging in things that bring them joy.
miss al boogie is finding a new home for her artistry in making music. Called a quirky Teena Marie or an R&B Bjork, miss al boogie likes to produce a thoughtful lyric, strong groove and funky vocal. She is currently penning and collaborating on the production of her next album and freelancing as a songwriter.
Born December 7th, 1993 in Ontario, Canada, Mouse Sucks moved to the United States at the age of 6 and developed an all around appreciation for art. He’ll be sharing some of my recent creations from two musical projects that I’ve been working on with some frequent collaborators who will share not only music but visuals and spoken word as well.
Nadine Huggins is a New York City bred and based artist. Through her work she transcends her West Indian roots and her Brooklyn upbringing. Nadine will create temporary art installations at using coloured chalks. She will invite young people to have a conversation about what is art, who can appreciate it and the importance and significance of temporary beauty.
Nicholas Powers is professor of literature, reporter, poet and author of The Ground Below Zero: 9/11 to Burning Man, New Orleans to Darfur, Haiti to Occupy Wall Street. Nicholas will create a collaborative spoken word piece with attendees. The goal is the act of intentional consciousness where we hold space for each other and in that space, create art.
Musician Noni Rene (also known as “TheVillageKid”) produced her own sound while a student at Lincoln University. Singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and founder of her own production company (TheVillageKid Productions), Noni Rene released her debut EP “Coming To Paz” in June of 2014. She and her band will play an array of songs and keep the crowd engaged with some crowd participation!
OlaRonke is a Brooklyn born artist interested in exploring the varying ways we connect to each other as people through the lens of race, gender and culture. The Free Black Woman’s Library is a mobile book sharing unit that contains up to 100 books of varying genres written by Black women. Recenty featured on DNA Info, the unit travels throughout Brooklyn area and is stationed in different outdoor locations.
Paul DEO began painting at age 5, under the tutelage of his Aunt Auressa Moore in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. He is an extremely imaginative humanitarian artist with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. Paul sincerely likes sharing his unique gift teaching and inspiring young students through media arts.
Sam Corbin is a force of whimsy. As an actress, wordsmith and arts pioneer, Sam has worked collaboratively with downtown theater companies throughout the city and its boroughs. Sam will share a looping performance of visual puns inspired by Bedford-Stuyvesant. She will invite viewers to play on words and phrases commonly associated with the neighborhood in order to explore duality of perception.
Taja Lindley is an interdisciplinary performance artist. Through a combination of movement, text, installation, ritual and multi-media she is creating performance art that is concerned with freedom, and healing. Taja will be doing an interactive public performance iteration of This Ain’t A Eulogy. She will transform a stoop into an altar where she will perform a healing ritual honoring the Black lives we've lost.
Tony Wells has lived and worked throughout this city. A self taught artist, he have always found the city inspirational. Some of his collages are like music in its movement and harmony within structure and color schemes. Most of them are made up of several hundred separate pieces of paper with carefully chosen image, color and structural properties. The work is vivid.
Wéma Harris is a Brooklyn based performing artist, educator and activist. A deep love for the arts has brought her talents to audiences around the United States as well as abroad. 900 Murmurs of Freedom is the next phase of a new Theatre/Dance performance piece that premiered at STooPS 2014. It engages the audience to reflect on the idea of freedom and internalized oppression.
Yasmin Mistry is an Emmy-nominated animator & filmmaker based out of Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been displayed worldwide including recent showings at the White House, United Nations and the Louvre, as well as at film festival such as Cannes, SXSW, Tribeca, and Clermont-Ferrand. She is in the process of creating a series of films about foster care. By showing her short film, Feeling Wanted, and having foster youth there in person to speak, we can entertain and educate the community.
Yoav Shlomov was born in Israel in 1993. He attended the prestigious Thelma Yellin School of Arts, graduating with excellence from the jazz department at age 18. The project he is presenting is becoming one of the most innovative Jazz combos around. His band will play original Jazz tunes influenced by the traditions of Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane.

About STooPS
STooPS is a community-building event that uses the arts to bring people outside and promotes social interaction among artists, homeowners, residents, and businesses of Bed-Stuy. Bed-Stuy homeowners collaborate with local artists to host performances and art showcases on their stoops, storefronts, yards, or sidewalks. To encourage family-wide participation, the Kiddie Korner will feature various children's art activities. STooPS culminates in performances by a local youth group, Viewers’ Choice STooPS Artist (selected by social media fans), and Brooklyn-based headlining artist.
Recent changes in demographics and economics have evolved the fabric of Bed-Stuy. STooPS builds on the unmistakable Bed-Stuy identity and bridges the gap between Bed-Stuy “then” and “now.” It is a tangible way to unite artists, new residents, businesses, and those deeply invested in the neighborhood such as homeowners and community organizations. STooPS supports members of the neighborhood in discovering and sharing the multitude of resources that exist within Bed-Stuy.
Now in its third year, STooPS has been a huge success, connecting 8 organizers, 80 artists based in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, and beyond, 50 Bed-Stuy homeowners, 30 local businesses, 50 volunteers and approximately 400 attendees. The event has been featured in the BK Reader, Brokelyn, A.R.T.S.Y. Magazine, and covered by News12 Brooklyn. The STooPS team is ecstatic about engaging the Bed-Stuy community for yet another year.
STooPS is just one way to engage, support, and develop Bed-Stuy, and as STooPS expands, the entire Brooklyn community grows stronger.
