Message from the Deans
I would like to begin by extending a heartfelt congratulations to all of our graduating undergraduate and graduate students. These students have chosen to take a disciplined, focused and dedicated journey toward educational achievement. They have built a solid foundation and have received the critical equipping necessary to launch their professional and continued academic journeys. We are confident they will make lasting contributions to the communities which they represent.
President John Quincy Adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” This quotation reflects the dedication of the faculty, staff and advisors of CASSH who have been committed to the advancement of our students’ educational goals, success and professional development. With the 2014/2015 academic year coming to a close, we should take time to stop and reflect on all we've accomplished as the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Just this year, we have built a college from the ground up, welcomed a wonderful new dean, developed and implemented office processes to improve our workflow, weathered a hugely successful SACSCOC reaffirmation, met major performance-based funding benchmarks, secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in internal and external grant funding, attracted new donors to support college efforts, and provided community-enriching programs featuring nationally-renowned speakers and performers. Did somebody say Banner went live too?
Your collective work to see so many major efforts to the finish line this year made all the difference. Mark CASSH's first year as a huge success! Have a great summer. You deserve it!

Janine Velez Vazquez is an International Studies and Anthropology major.
Anthropology Major Selected to Research in Peru This Summer
Anthropology major Janine Velez Vazquez has been selected to join the Proyecto Bio-Arqueológico de Ayacucho in Peru this summer. Under the direction of Dr. Tiffiny Tung of Vanderbilt University, Velez will be part of a team that is carrying out bioarchaeological research on skeletons from the Late Intermediate Period (1000-1400 AD). The team is hoping to answer questions about health and trauma in this ancient population that lived between the times of the Wari and the Inca Empires.
Velez brings to the team her knowledge of human skeletal anatomy gained through Dr. Kristina Killgrove's Human Osteology course and Dr. Joanne Curtin's Forensic Anthropology Field School, her fluency in Spanish and her passion for bioarchaeology. The National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program is providing full funding for Velez to travel to Peru and join the research team for four weeks this summer.
Velez is a dedicated student committed to scholarly success. She is a double major in International Studies, with a focus in International Business and Anthropology, focusing in Biological Anthropology. Velez is also pursuing a minor in Art History. For the past three years, she has served as a UWF Student Ambassador.She credits her role as a resident assistant for being fundamental to her success in the program.
Of her opportunity, Velez says, "I am very blessed and humbled by this amazing opportunity, one that I would have never dreamed of accomplishing at such a young age. I have my parents, the amazing professors and peers at UWF to thank for believing in me and helping me achieve my dreams. Being a Puerto Rican female is already hard in this society, especially in my major, but being a UWF student and having the support of my professor on this opportunity has given me an abundance of confidence."

Where Would You Play?
Play Pensacola, Pensacola's Parks and Recreation, is “creating community through people, parks and programs.” The city provides over 50 parks to the Pensacola community with space to explore, revive, relax and play. With so many public spaces from which to choose and each park holding its own unique characteristics, freshmen of the Department of Government’s Honors Core II class decided to rank the spaces and develop a Public Spaces Index in partnership with UWF’s Geographic Information Science (GIS) Lab.
Students surveyed the 50 plus spaces scoring each for economic indicators such as safety, crime, comfort, meaningful activity and pleasurable atmospheres. The students’ research showed that some parks ranked higher than others for having flexible designs accommodating a variety of activities. The majority of parks exist in residential areas, lacking consumer opportunities such as restaurants. Overall, parks scored low for comfortable seating, but maintained high scores for perceived safety during daylight hours.
Students photographed, labeled and ranked each space and partnered with the GIS Lab to develop an online community resource for evaluating these spaces. The Public Space Index can be viewed online.
In addition to analyzing the public spaces, students also created a Service Opportunity Index which provides community citizens with information on volunteer and service opportunities.

Ripe. BFA Graphic Design Exit Show features the work of graduating seniors.
Experience the Work of UWF's First BFA Graphic Design Grads
The University of West Florida’s Department of Art invites you to the inaugural Bachelor of Fine Arts Graphic Design Exit Show - "Ripe." The Exhibit will be on display May 2 through May 9 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. in the atrium of the UWF Innovation Institute at 321 N. De Villers St. in downtown Pensacola and is free and open to the public.
The exhibit includes the work of eight students, the first graduating class of BFA Graphic Design students from the University of West Florida. "Ripe" highlights the work of these students as their growth over the last four years has come to fruition, and they are now "ripe for the picking" in the job market. Graphic design informs our commercial, social, public and political landscape. Through the creation of posters, books, magazines, websites, advertisements, graphic identities, and motion graphics, the students have learned to engage in the dialogue that is at the core of our visual culture. Their final project, this exhibition, combines all of the skills they have learned throughout their time at UWF as they collaborate to design a graphic identity and fully compose the exhibition environment.

UWF 2015 CASSH Symposium Scholars and Winners
The UWF Student Scholars Symposium and Faculty Research Showcase features the scholarly and creative works produced through collaboration between UWF students and faculty. This year, the symposium was held in April and featured the work of twelve CASSH students and one faculty member representing six different disciplines.
For her work, “Art Cats”, Calilman-Jongko received two awards: CASSH Best Student Presentation and the Department of Art Best Student Project. “Art Cats” is a compilation of popular artistic renderings that take the form of cats. In “Art Cats” ... (Read more).

2015 CASSH Cadets Commissioned
Congratulations to all UWF cadets who were commissioned on May 1, 2015 into the U.S. Army. In total, eight cadets have been commissioned into active duty with the U.S. Army, five will be serving in the U.S. Army Reserves and three have been commissioned into the U.S. Army National Guard.

Grad Student and Organization Lead in Excellence
Congratulations to Rebecca Namniek for winning the UWF Outstanding Graduate Student Leader Award. Namniek is also co-president and co-founder of UWF's Women's Study Collective which recently won UWF's Breakout Organization of the Year Award, presented by the University Commons and Student Involvement. The award recognizes the leadership, programming, and promotion of the Women's Study Collective's mission.
Namniek says this achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication and enthusiasm of the undergraduate and graduate student members. Congratulations to Students Accepted Into Graduate Programs
Philosophy student Cody Conant has been accepted (with funding and full tuition remission) to several graduate programs in Philosophy. He will begin graduate studies in Philosophy at Florida State University in the fall.
Philosophy student Darian Bolen has been accepted (with funding and travel expenses) to Brown University's Summer Immersion Program in Philosophy. This is a residential program for undergraduate philosophy students from underrepresented groups in the discipline. He will attend seminars taught by Brown University faculty.
Congratulations to Ethan Putman, student in the Division of Anthropology and Archaeology, who was just accepted, with funding, into USF's Graduate Program in Applied Anthropology.

CASSH Now Offering Professional Writing Certificate
Employers in a variety of settings look for students with strong writing skills applicable to the professional environment. Thanks to a $5,000 grant received in response to UWF’s Quality Enhancement Plan, the Department of English and World Languages will be offering a Certificate in Public, Technical and Workplace writing beginning in the fall of 2015. This offering is in response to UWF’s Quality Enhancement Plan which is committed to linking both verbal and written communication skills with UWF high-impact practices and student preparation for subsequent professional goals, including graduate studies and/or entry into the public workforce or private industry.
With professional writing skills in great demand, the Department of English and World Languages has recognized the need to make professional communication a centerpiece of educational efforts beyond the traditional English major.
The Certificate in Public, Technical, and Workplace Writing provides students with a competitive edge, while equipping them with workplace readiness. The program requires nine semester hours in foundational courses and three semester hours of electives in specialized writing. Students in the certificate program will gain practical experience in assembling writing samples generated across all courses of the program. Through the program, students will achieve such goals as:
- Identify and write to target audiences
- Produce public, technical, and workplace documents
- Demonstrate teamwork skills through collaborating on the creation, development, implementation, presentation, and refinement of documents
- Design solutions that link audience and a text’s message
- Conduct and incorporate primary and secondary research as appropriate to develop and support the document’s main purpose and message
- Employ a variety of writing tools across digital media
- Demonstrate proficiency in editing and revising documents for public audiences
In the fall, the Department of English and World Languages will offer two certificate courses: ENC 3213 Technical and Professional Writing and LIN 3673 Grammar for Academic and Professional Success. If you have any questions, contact Composition Program Director, Dr. Bre Garrett, rgarrett@uwf.edu.
