Alexandra Aivalioti
Head of Marketing, SyFy

A huge thanks to Alison at Searchlight Executive who recently appointed me into the role of Head of Marketing, SyFy at NBCUniversal.

This is a newly created position for NBCUniversal and I have been brought in to lead the development and execution of an integrated marketing strategy for SyFy.

My role is to develop and deliver 360 marketing strategies for major SyFy brands as well as creating exciting new brand partnerships for the Channel.

A recent project that I really enjoyed working on was the #SyFyFanCam campaign which we put into action at the London Super Comic Con and managed to get Jonathon Ross on board:

Working on the 12 Monkeys campaign was another highlight as we worked up to its UK premier on the 27th February by installing a Biohazard Bacteria Billboard within Waterloo Station, which you can see footage for here.

WELCOME TO THE SPRING EDITION OF NEWS & VIEWS!

As April comes to a close, we thought it was due time we got out the Searchlight Spring Newsletter before the Summer kicks in.

This month saw another successful MIPTV, and we’ve decided to shine a light on the relatively new Mip Digital Fronts that took place.

And in-keeping with the theme of Digital, we're shining a light on the music industry after Jay-Z’s TIDAL service launch and the effects Digital is having on the music industry.

Amongst that is our usual recruitment news so please read on for new jobs and industry events!

Digital Music Streaming
TIDAL to Sink Spotify?

While the big discussion of recent years has been that of On-Demand services such as Netflix tackling the Home Entertainment market, the digital streaming of music and its effects on the music industry are now overtaking the blogs and twitter feeds of the net.

Spotify has been the big name when discussing the digital streaming of music, and it has been highlighted many times by aspiring (and already aspired) musicians, that the current revenue sharing system is not in the artists favour.

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow recently caused a twitter furor when he tweeted the (approximate) little amount he’d made off of 34,000,000 streams of Portishead's music, placing the blame on Spotify, Apple and YouTube.  (He says £1700.)

Enter Jay Z and his TIDAL music streaming service (originally built by Scandinavian company Aspiro) which is allegedly here to save artists and claim their money back.

However, the current approach TIDAL have taken to ruling the music streaming industry haven’t been too successful, at least taking the backlash on the internet into account.

Complaints about Jay-Z’s  launch event say it came across as a stage filled with millionaire mainstream chart toppers moaning about not making enough money.

Surely he should have filled the event with new artists and broached the fact that new artists will benefit from us forking out a little extra for TIDAL, which in the UK is more expensive than the premium Spotify subscription. (TIDAL is twice as much coming in at £19.99 in the UK.)

There was also the announcement that TIDAL’s CEO has left after two weeks of the re-launch and rumours that there are redundancies, although they have said this is not accurate by releasing a statement to Business Insider:  “We’re streamlining the company and refocusing our resources to ensure the platform continues to grow, and listeners can make a connection to their favorite artists. No one else is doing this.” Sounds like redundancies to us…

Further news released this week has seen the TIDAL app drop from being in the Top 20 app chart to being outside of the Top 700...so as things look, Spotify will stay on top.

But with complaints about the payment of royalties hitting Spotify across the board, we're starting to see a call to arms to rectify the situation as Digital starts to overtake consumers listening and purchasing habits.

What do you think? Are we jumping on the TIDAL bashing bandwagon and ignoring its real benefits? Or will you be keeping your Spotify account for those Friday office playlists?

We’re sure many of you will have had your inboxes inundated with MIPTV this and MIPTV that over the past week…so for this newsletter we’ve decided to take a closer look at this year’s Mip Digital Fronts two day event.

Only in its second year, Mip Digital Fronts, as you can guess from the title, focuses upon the International Digital Content marketplace as the creation, acquisition and programming of online content continues to become a larger component within the TV Content industry

With backing, sponsoring and attendance from the big wigs within the online sector of content such as YouTube, Buzzfeed, DailyMotion and Awesomeness TV, the second edition of Mip Digi Fronts was another incredibly informative and engaging event.

We’re also happy to report that Maker Studios, a big name in the digital content game and one of our clients, were in the programming, presenting as well as screening in the Grand Auditorium.

And where the internet lies, you will always find Buzzfeed, who gave a terrific keynote on “The Future of Digital Hollywood”, presented by President Ze Frank and Producer Michael Shamberg. With Buzzfeed Motion Pictures now in existence (as of August 2014,) they covered the emerging shifts in production and distribution that are beginning to shake up the traditional TV and Studio models.

Other companies in attendance included Machinima, SlashTag TV, VOX Media, Screen Australia, CDS, New Form Digital, Rooster Teeth, Dim Sum, MeMeMe, WebTV Asia and Zoomin.

With the Digital sector continuing to grow as it becomes an integral part of the content market, we look forward to seeing Mip Digital Fronts becoming a bigger and better place learn and network each year.

So until 2016, we’re off to Youtube some new webseries…
