Twitter allows more direct messages

Twitter is gives you the option to receive private messages from people you don’t “follow” on the network. Previously, two Twitter accounts had to follow each other on the social network before they could trade private “Direct Messages,” or DMs.

The Real Peel: The changes are designed to expand the use of Twitter among not only everyday users, but companies, public personalities and advertisers as well, according to Wired. More widespread use of Direct Messaging could be one way for Twitter to keep up with competitors like Facebook, which has made private messages a priority through tools like Messenger and WhatsApp. On Twitter, organizations could use DMs to send advertisements, coupons and business related appeals to anyone who turned on the new setting. For users, on the other hand, such messages could feel spammy fast.

NORWAY ELIMINATES FM RADIO

In less than two years, Norway plans to eliminate FM radio, becoming the first country in the world to do so. The country's government announced they will transition completely to Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) in January 2017. Several countries in Europe and Southeast Asia are also considering a switch to digital broadcasting, according to NPR.

The Real Peel: In Norway, the FM system only had space for five national channels while DAB already offers 22 with the capacity for almost 20 more. The cost of transmitting through its FM network is eight times higher than with DAB. However, only 20 percent of private cars are equipped with DAB technology, despite its wide availability. With new technology comes changes in media consumption, but only time will tell if Norway's transition will be beneficial to its radio listeners.

FACEBOOK CHANGES algorithm

Facebook announced it is changing the algorithm of its News Feed to favor more content from users' close friends. Facebook reports "content posted by the friends you care about" will be "higher up in the News Feed." Also, if a friend interacts with a post from a brand or publisher page, it will be less likely to show up in your News Feed (The Verge). Another key change is Facebook won't let people reach the "end" of a News Feed as easily, because it will be willing to show more content from the same publisher than before.

The Real Peel: Facebook's changes make it likely that users will see more content from their friends and less from Pages. However the announcement said, "If you like to read news or interact with posts from pages you care about, you will still see that content in News Feed," making engaging content from Pages more important than ever.

NetFlix to reboot 'full house'

This week Netflix announced its intentions to reboot the 80s-to-early 90s comedy 'Full House,' under a new title, 'Fuller House.' The spin-off is targeted at generations who still have fond memories of the original, in hopes the nostalgia factor will bring in viewers. The sitcom will reunite former cast members Candace Cameron-Bure ("D.J. Tanner"), Jodie Sweetin ("Stephanie Tanner"), Andrea Barner ("Kimmy Gibbler") and John Stamos ("Uncle Jesse"). Netflix also noted discussions with additional cast members regarding guest appearances.

The Real Peel: The internet isn't always so kind to TV and film remakes, but surprisingly the buzz around "Fuller House" is trending toward being more positive, according to TechCrunch. As nostalgic parents watch the show with their children, Netflix hopes to attract the whole family. After adult hits like 'House of Cards' and 'Orange is the New Black,' the company is getting its feet wet in family-friendly content.
