Jean-Michel Basquiat

Skateboards
About The Work
From the time he was a young boy, Jean-Michel Basquiat was known to have pored over the medical textbook Gray’s Anatomy. Much of the anatomical imagery and diagram-like composition of his paintings, drawings, and prints is derived from that interest. Later influenced by the bright, gestural symbology of graffiti, Basquiat’s unique and versatile style is deeply connected to the downtown New York music and arts scenes through his early work as a street artist. This edition on skateboard for Skateroom, created in collaboration with Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, features a triptych recreation on three skate decks of his 1982 painting, Quality Meats For the Public

About The Artist
A renowned painter, draftsman, poet, musician, and graffiti artist, as well as an all-around arts icon, Jean-Michel Basquiat was at the forefront of New York’s downtown avant-garde in the late 1970s and 80s. Friend to many but known well by a very few, Basquiat’s influence on subsequent generations of artists has been immense. Basquiat was born to Afro-Caribbean immigrants in 1960, and though he grew up in New York, Basquiat spent two years living in Puerto Rico, his mother’s country of origin. At the age of 16, he dropped out of high school, moved out of his parents’ house, and befriended several artists in New York’s downtown scene.

Yohji Yamamoto | Designer
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Born in Tokyo, Yamamoto graduated from Keio University with a degree in law in 1966. His further studies in fashion design at Bunka Fashion College led to a degree in 1969. Yamamoto debuted in Paris in 1981. In an interview with the New York Times in 1983, Yamamoto said of his designs, "'I think that my men's clothes look as good on women as my women's clothing. When I started designing, I wanted to make men's clothes for women." More recently he has expounded: “When I started making clothes for my line Y’s in 1977, all I wanted was for women to wear men’s clothes. I jumped on the idea of designing coats for women. It meant something to me – the idea of a coat guarding and hiding a woman’s body. I wanted to protect the woman’s body from something – maybe from men’s eyes or a cold wind.”
