SWU/GAMAC join voices

The SWU Concert Choir combined with the Chorale of the Greater Anderson Musical Arts Consortium (GAMAC) to present a glorious concert featuring Bernstein, Brahms and Beethoven. Dr. Don R. Campbell conducted the concert, which took place this past Friday at Boulevard Baptist Church in Anderson.

SWU at the Railroad Festival

SWU student Christian May contemplates his next move at checkers during the Central Railroad Festival this past Saturday. SWU hosted kids games and crafts at the festival. Also, the SWU Jazz Band, directed by Greg Day, music professor, kicked off the festival with toe-tapping tunes.

Gift helps SWU media communication program expand

A gift from the Green Family Foundation is equipping SWU’s media communication majors with experiences that will help them better stand out as they graduate into an ever-expanding, ever-changing field. Read more>>

PASS Grant Received

Wells Fargo awarded SWU a $2,500 grant to support the PASS (Athletic Academic Student Success) program. “We have been blessed with some great friends at Wells Fargo” said University President Todd Voss, “first supporting the purchase of a 3D printer for our CIS students, and now supporting the academic progress of our athletes!” These small but steady steps are improving learning and success for our students. Voss added a note of thanks to Robert Halfacre and Susan Bankson at Wells Fargo for their vote of confidence in SWU!

Kingdom Vision Behind Transfer of Former ALIVE Property to SWU

The former First Wesleyan Church (Now ALIVE Wesleyan Church) property was transferred to SWU April 21. 
The property is currently being prepared for use as the Nicholson-Mitchell Christian Ministry Center, a new home for the university’s Division of Religion. Read more on the remarkable story of this transition!

New admissions director

David Slabaugh began his duties last week as SWU’s new director of admissions. He comes to SWU with seven years of proven experience in the admissions environment, most recently as assistant director of admissions at Indiana Wesleyan University. Read more>>

SWU to award degrees in two ceremonies

SWU graduates will soon receive their degrees during commencement at the Central campus, May 8 and 9. The speaker will be John H. Dickey (pictured), a SWU graduate who served as an advisor to the CEO of Hill-Rom Holdings, Inc., recently retired. Commander Dennis K. Andrews, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, a SWU graduate and a minister in The Wesleyan Church, will deliver the baccalaureate sermon. Graduation details can be found here.

Celebrating Spring graduates

SWU's Alumni Association hosted receptions for spring graduates at the Greenville and Charleston learning centers this past week. The Alumni Association is planning a reception Tuesday for traditional and AGS graduates at SWU's Central campus, in The Founders. A reception honoring North Augusta graduates will take place Thursday

SWU offering Wilderness First Responder course in May 

SWU will offer a course that will better prepare those leading groups on a hike or other wilderness experiences to deal with broken bones, snakebites and other emergencies that could arise when beyond the reach of readily available medical help or a cell signal to call 911. Read more>>
Personnel Announcements
  • Laura Hedden joins SWU’s Financial Aid team on May 1 as financial aid counselor for the traditional program. Hedden received a BA in English from SWU in 2004 and has been employed by the City of Clemson since 2011 in human resources and the planning and codes department. She is excited to be returning to her alma mater.
  • Ellen Pate will start July 1 as director of career services. Pate completed her BS in psychology and MA in school and community counseling from Indiana Wesleyan University. With an extensive professional background in student career development—first at IWU, and since 2005 at the University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa—we are looking forward to the expertise she will bring to the Student Life team.
  • The School of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Patrice Shearin as associate professor of physical education. Shearin received her M.Ed. in elementary education from SCSU and her Ph.D. in physical education from USC. Since 2005, she has been teaching physical education at Anderson University. She will begin teaching at SWU in the fall.
  • Dr. Ashlee Tietje joins SWU’s Science Division this fall (full-time) as assistant professor of biology. Tietje recently successfully defended her doctoral dissertation and will be graduating from Clemson with her Ph.D. in biological sciences next month. She received her BS in biology education from SWU (2006) and has been teaching here as an adjunct faculty since 2013.

Coming to the Charleston area May 12 is SWU Day with the RiverDogs. Alumni or current Charleston students can go to SWU Charleston's Facebook Page and find out how to receive a free ticket. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

SWU partners with Ronald McDonald House, extends deadline

SWU's North Augusta learning center is collecting items to make life easier for families staying with hospitalized children in the Augusta area. The university is again partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities® for donations. The deadline has been extended to May 8 for SWU to waive app fees for prospective students.  Read more>>

Outstanding SWU student-athletes will be honored at the 2015 SWUPYS, an annual "black tie" event held April 30 at Newton Hobson auditorium. More details at swuathletics.com
Steady progress is being made on the new press box at Joe R. Gilbert Track and Field. The structure, as you can see, is dried in and windows are in place. Plans also include the addition of bleachers to the new track/soccer complex.
