APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER
Spring is starting out with a flurry of events!

The CRC Streams Cleanup is this Saturday – we’ll be spring-cleaning Broomall’s Run, the woods, and trails. We’ll also clean the stage in preparation for our Summer Concert Series(!), and enjoy coffee generously donated by Seven Stones Café! Join us Saturday at 9:00 at the main entrance – details are on our website.

One week later, we’ll reap the benefits of our spring-cleaning efforts on a Spring Nature Walk through the park, led by naturalist Gary Stolz. He has decades of experience leading nature walks and programs nationally and internationally, which he will bring to Glen Providence Park! Join us Sunday, May 3 at 10:00 at the main entrance.

Just yesterday we celebrated Earth Day and the 80th Anniversary year of Glen Providence Park with representatives of Delaware County, and with the 2nd and 3rd grade classes from Media Providence Friends School! It was a lovely event with student poetry readings, tree plantings, a water bucket brigade uphill from Broomall’s Run, and pizza. Delaware County Council presented us with a resolution honoring the park’s 80th Anniversary! See our website for photos, poems, the resolution, and links to the wonderful press - including TV news!

In this 80th Anniversary year, we continue to write about the park’s rich history, which is part of what makes Glen Providence so special. Our latest article is about the 1800’s Scroggie Shingle Mill that gave the glen its early name of Scroggie Valley – including a possible photograph of that mill! Our website is getting packed with historical information, so for easy reference we created a chronological timeline of park history.

3rd Street Project
We continue to monitor the 3rd Street Project, and we shared the proposed construction timeline presented earlier this month by project engineer John Harrison of Schnabel Engineering. The Friends of Glen Providence Park continues to support dam removal, stream restoration and a local discussion of an environmentally-sensitive bridge between Media Borough and Upper Providence.

Open Space Plan
The final public meeting on March 30 was well attended, as County Planning explained its comprehensive and thoughtful plans for county parks, including a Site Development Plan for Glen Providence. We provided written input and comments to those plans. The Open Space Plan was officially adopted at the Delaware County Council meeting on Earth Day!

Save the Dates!
A wider announcement of our 2015 Summer Concert Series will come soon, but for now you can save the dates, which are also listed on our website calendar and Facebook events:
  • June 6 - Blackbird Society Orchestra
  • July 25 - Jean Therapy – on the 80th anniversary weekend of the park's deed signing!
  • August 29 - Woodwind quintet Philly Winds
  • September 13 - Let There Be Rock
Enjoy these beautiful spring months – if you are wondering what you might find, check out our 2014 Spring-Summer Photojournal, and follow us on Facebook for new sightings!
