May 2015 Events



Aspiring Authors Workshop
Monday May 4th 3:30-4:30pm
Who: Students in grades 8th – 12th
Where: Olean Public Library’s Conference Room
When: Every first Monday @ 3:30pm
 
If you have a serious writing habit and would like to take it to the next level, come check out our monthly writing group. Bring your latest writing project from any genre, either short story or novel length, and learn how to edit, write better descriptions, create more realistic characters, and get tips on how to prepare for publishing. We will share work with the group, so prepare to read aloud, or to have work read silently by a peer for editing and advice. This will be a working session, so bring paper/pen, laptop, or tablet. No signup necessary.

May the Fourth – Star Wars Event
Monday May 4th at 4pm
The Olean Public Library will offer games, activities and crafts to celebrate the epic space saga Star Wars on May 4th at 4:00PM. Children aged 6-14 can come in costume and participate in Yoda Origami, light saber making, trivia, games and more. For more information please call the Olean Public Library at 716-372-0200. Trustee & 2016 Budget Vote
Tuesday May 5th 9am-7pm
In order to vote you must be: a citizen of the United States, 18 years or older, registered to vote, and a resident of the Olean City School District for at least 30 days.  Absentee ballots are available.  Please vote in support of our library budget proposal.  

LEGO® Club
Tuesdays 3:30-4:30pm
Ages 6-15
May 5th, 12th, 19th, & 26th
We provide the LEGO bricks, you provide the creativity!  LEGO Club members meet weekly to build with LEGO Bricks.  Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Internet Basics II
Thursday May 7th 10:30am-12pm
Taught in person at the library, a continuation of Internet Basics I. This class will cover:
•           How do I evaluate information?
•           Can I use the information on the Internet I find freely?
•           How can I avoid scams?
*Prerequisites: Participants need to know how to use a mouse and how to open and close computer programs.*

Little Lace Bag
Thursday May 7th 5:30-6:30pm
Student Prerequisite:
Ability to knit, read a pattern and follow directions.
 
Expert knitter Joan Debolt will lead us in creating Little Lace Bags that can be used for gifting handmade items like soap or potpourri. The purpose of this class is to teach the following: Proper yarn overs both after and before knit stitches, picot bind off, ruffle cast on, and lots of little techniques as we go along. Sign-up required. Call 716-372-0200.

Olean Area Crochet & Knitting Group
Thursday May 7th 6:30pm
Olean Area Crochet & Knitting Group meeting the first Thursday of every month. New members always welcome. Bring your current knit or crochet project.

Author Ann McCauley
Saturday, May 9th at 2pm
Ann McCauley will read from her current work at 2 p.m. on May 9 at the Olean Public Library, she will take questions, as well as a present a short interactive writer’s workshop.
 
Ann is the author of Mother Love and Runaway Grandma, both novels bring uncommon stories about complicated relationships and family ties to life in page-turning fiction.
 
Ann is also a contributor to the anthologies: Women Writing on Family and Writing After Retirement. Both anthologies received excellent reviews and have been well received. Pressure Cooker Christmas, her next novel, is currently with a NYC agent.

Free Blood Pressure & Body Fat Analysis Screenings
Monday May 11th 10am-12pm
An employee of Olean General Hospital will be here to offer free blood pressure and body fat analysis screenings.  No appointment necessary.

Tuesday Craft – Make a Mini Scrapbook out of Toilet Paper Rolls
Tuesday May 12th 12:30-2pm
Learn how to recycle your toilet paper rolls into a beautiful mini scrapbook. Supplies will be provided. You may bring your own scrapbooking materials if you would like.   Space is limited. Sign up at the Circulation Desk or by calling (716) 372-0200.

Buttons – History and Collecting
Saturday May 16th 2-3pm
The Olean Historical Society will present "Buttons - History and Collecting" on Saturday May 16th at 2pm in the art gallery. Louise Koenig, Historical Society Volunteer, Donna Costanza, Olean Public Library Volunteer, and members of the WNY Button Society will present their collections of buttons, both decorative and military.

Brown Bag Book Club – Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline
Tuesday May 19th 12:30-1:30pm
Bring your lunch and come and discuss the book. Beverages and dessert provided by Friends of the Olean Library, Inc.


Intro to MedlinePlus
Thursday May 21st 10:30am-12pm
Taught in person at the library. "MedlinePlus is the National Institutes of Health's Web site for patients and their families and friends. Produced by the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library, it brings you information about diseases, conditions, and wellness issues in language you can understand. MedlinePlus offers reliable, up-to-date health information, anytime, anywhere, for free."
 
Students will learn the main features of the Home Page of MedlinePlus, how to find a topic on the Health Topics page, how to use the MedlinePlus Search Box, how to use the Medical Dictionary, about the Quality Guidelines MedlinePlus uses to select the information it includes on the website, and be able to find answers to health questions of personal interest.

Memorial Day – Library Closed
Monday May 25th
We will reopen on Tuesday at 9am. As always, you can access our online resources (including downloadable audio and ebooks) at oleanlibrary.org.

Author Beth Andrews
Saturday May 30th at 2pm
Beth Andrews will be at the Olean Public Library on May 30th at 2pm to speak about her new book, About that Night, which is book 7 in the Shady Grove series and slated to be released in June.
 
Romance Writers of America RITA® Award winning author Beth Andrews writes edgy, emotional contemporary romance for Harlequin Superromance. She loves coffee, hockey and happy endings.
 
Appearing in June…
 
Ford Easton, author of Stock Car Racing in the ‘50s
June 4th at 3pm
 A native of Friendship, NY who now lives in Florida, Mr. Easton will talk about the early days of stock car racing, highlighting WNY & nearby PA tracks which are included in the book as well as the reasons and events leading to the publishing of his book. More details to come.
