Championing Summer Learning

May 2015 Newsletter
Dear Dear Community Partner,

The Ed Fund is committed to increasing opportunities for our children to participate in quality after-school and summer programs. Children who consistently participate in quality after-school and summer programs that provide meaningful enrichment activities do far better academically, are healthier, and exhibit stronger emotional resilience than their peers who do not participate in these same enrichment activities.

Since 2011, the Ed Fund has been the proud convener of the West Contra Costa Out-of-School Time Collaborative, a collective of organizations and individuals whose mission is to
increase access to high quality Out-of-School Time programs that inspire, empower, and educate West Contra Costa children and youth.

Ed Fund, in partnership with the City of Richmond and the West Contra Costa Unified School District joined together in the summer of 2014 to pilot a new model for City summer camps. As part of the redesign for the 2014 Summer Pilot Program, the Ed Fund played a lead role in partnering high quality specialty providers and WCCUSD certified teachers as a key strategy to support the summer camp experience for youth. This summer, we are administering Summer Program Grants to The Berkeley Chess School, Leading2Play, Mindful Life Project, East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, and the Richmond Art Center to deliver high quality programming at City summer camps held at Shields Reid, Nevin, Booker T. Anderson and Parchester Community Centers.

In addition, the Out-of-School Collaborative, with the support of the East Bay Community Foundation and the West Contra Costa Unified School District, has produced its annual free Get Your Summer On! 2015 Summer Activity Guide in both English and Spanish to get kids involved in high quality summer programs so that they can be safe, be active and keep learning. The summer learning programs showcased in our Get Your Summer On! Summer Activity Guide provide a balance of activities in academics, enrichment, and physical activities and offer an array of activities for the entire family.

Sincerely,

Joel Mackey
Executive Director

Ed Fund's 27th Annual Soaring to Excellence Celebration was a moving and inspiring event with over 350 people in attendance to honor our teachers, students and collaborative partners. Some of the highlights of the evening included hearing the students introduce our Teaching Excellence Awardees Brent Knapp, Maribel Lopez, Molly Salyk, Andre Shie and Keith Valdez and their responses, Executive Director Joel Mackey and Assemblymember Tony Thurmond's stirring addresses, the student performances from the Pinole Valley High School band and two of the Ed Fund's Arts & Music Impact Grant Awardees the Mira Visa Elementary School Oakland Youth Chorus and East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, Collaborative Partner of the Year Liz Chavez's colleagues giving her a standing ovation for her longstanding service, the pride of the families for the 2015 Scholarship recipients, and the overall generosity of our sponsors and community.

A big thank you to everyone who supported our Help a Student Scholar Soar to Excellence Crowdrising campaign, which culminated the night of the Celebration. We're delighted to announce that we raised a total of $13,555 exceeding our $10,000 goal.

It was all captured by our photographers extraordinaire Don Gosney and David Lee for your enjoyment. Click on the photo albums below:
