Facing Up 2 Kidney Cancer starts June 6

"I'm a farmer and have always loved motorbikes, but I've been told by my consultant that I have terminal kidney cancer.  What do you do when you get news like that? Well I'm going to have an adventure..."

Jon Birchall's epic, Facing Up 2 Kidney Cancer 5000-mile motorcycle ride around coastal mainland Great Britain is nearing launch. Jon sets off at 12 noon, on June 6, from Blackpool's Comedy Carpet, in his mission to raise £50,000 to fund research into early diagnosis and treatments for kidney cancer, and to raise public awareness of the vital importance of early diagnosis.

Come and join us and wish him good luck as he sets off in Blackpool, or show your support by helping him reach the £50,000 target with a donation: "I would be so very grateful for each and every bit of help I receive."

Every moment of your time and every penny you donate, helps support patients and enables us to contribute funding to pioneering research

News round-up: latest advancements in the treatment of kidney cancer

Cancer vaccines: immunotherapy's vision

Imugene is developing a  cancer vaccine that targets the tumour antigen known as HER-2, found in some breast and gastric cancers.

Once delivered into the body, the vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies that attach themselves to the MUC-1 protein, enabling the body to attack and kill the tumour cells.

The first phase of the trial will test the effectiveness of the cancer vaccine in patients with breast, ovarian, prostate, colon and lung cancers.

Investigating new approaches to treat metastatic kidney cancer

Although the five-year survival of localized kidney cancer is very high, at 91.8 percent, that of metastatic kidney cancer is only 12.1 percent. These statistics emphasize the need to better understand what drives the progression
of kidney cancer and to develop more effective treatments for patients with advanced disease.

A new project, headed by Scott M. Welford, investigates what they hope will be a novel therapeutic approach in kidney cancer, based on identification of  a family of cytokines that promote tumour cell survival, endothelial cell migration and inflammatory cell infiltration.  Welford explained: “We hypothesize that by eliminating the function of these cytokines, renal carcinoma cells will become more susceptible to chemotherapies and radiation treatment, leading to synergistic responses to existing treatments.”

Toxin in your oat breakfast?

Oat-based breakfast cereals are under the spotlight as researchers
have detected potentially dangerous mould contamination. Some oat-based breakfast cereals contain a high-level of mould-related toxin called ochratoxin A (OTA) that has been linked to kidney cancer in animal studies.  The researchers concluded that oat production, storage and processing need careful review to better protect consumer health.

We need your help to support patients and pioneering research!

Thanks to research and the advanced knowledge it brings, ten-year survival rates for people diagnosed with kidney cancer in England and Wales have almost doubled in the last forty years.
However, the fight remains as urgent as ever, as kidney cancer is the eighth most common cancer in the UK, with around 28 people diagnosed each day. And sadly, in the past ten years, kidney cancer rates in the UK have increased by almost a third.

Your donations power our work raising awareness of and fighting kidney cancer.  From walking, to running marathons, cooking curry, to baking a biscuit, there are many ways our valued supporters raise money in support of the kidney cancer community.

Whether you wish to be a corporate supporter, to take part in, or run your own, event, and much more, visit our website for details on the many ways you can help.

My Complete Lifestyle Change.

Mary Hole shares her story of how her kidney cancer journey unfolded:

I am a sixty-four-year-old ex-mental health social worker who took early retirement. My ability to move quickly or get up from seats quickly was severely compromised by arthritis. I had been assessing only in hospital as my mobility worsened. My hips were operated on and replaced eventually but occupational health did not think it reasonable for me to return to my original community position. I was offered early retirement at sixty and took it.

I had always owned horses and had found someone (fourteen-year-old Emma) to help and exercise my horse while I was unable to ride for a few years...... Read Mary's full blog here
