RAMA ELEMENTARY'S ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND FOOD TRUCK RALLY -
FRIDAY, MAY 8

For 125 years, Rama Road Elementary School has played a significant role in educating children in and around our neighborhood. For the last 50 years, the building located on Rama Road has served as the school’s home. During that time, there have been many changes, which have helped form and shape the school into the outstanding institution that it is today.

On Friday, May 8, from 5:30 - 8:30, there will be a celebration of the legacy of the school in the community as current and former teachers, staff, students, families and neighbors to come to Rama for an evening to celebrate the milestone anniversary of the school in the community. Food trucks will be on hand so you can purchase food, and there will be speakers sharing past, present and future commentary about the importance of Rama Road.

While a formal RSVP isn't required, an expression of interest would be appreciated so food quantity isn't an issue. Email ramaanniversary@gmail.com with any questions you might have. Here's a flyer to spread the word!

ATTENTION PARENTS:  Stonehaven mom Christine Hill has a Facebook page for Stonehaven community parents to connect, share information, and for children to meet other children in the neighborhood. Check it out.

Last month's Vision meeting: update

As we told you last month, there was a good turnout of neighbors interested in talking about our vision for Stonehaven. Several ideas were proposed, and a survey was sent out to gauge interest.  Based on those survey responses, committees are discussing the merits of pursuing the following ideas:
  • Vehicle magnets promoting the neighborhood
  • Aging in place resources and support
  • Holiday lighting (voluntary!)
  • DIY tree-banding initiative
  • Connecting younger adult residents in the 'hood
Want to be involved with any of these groups?  Just click here to send an email.  Thanks to all meeting participants and survey respondents!

STONEHAVEN'S FIRST FRIDAY
MAY 1,  6-8 pm

Join your Stonehaven neighbors from 6 'til 8 on the first Friday of the month throughout the warm months, gathering casually in yards, on patios and on decks for a chance to visit.

This has become a popular Stonehaven tradition with everyone bringing an appetizer to share and whatever you care to drink.

Events are outdoors and, where hosts have a carport or porch, we’ll meet rain or shine. Unless otherwise indicated, children are welcome. Come be part of the fun!

Friday, May 1

Independence Regional Branch Library
Preteen Advisory Council

The Independence Regional Library is looking for motivated preteens (ages 10 – 11) who would like a chance to influence their local public library and earn community service hours.  The library has created a preteen advisory council in which participants can express their ideas concerning programming and materials for their age group.  The council meets on the last Wednesday of every month, and the next meeting will be held Wednesday April 29th from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.  All participants receive an hour of community service for each program attended.  If you have any questions, or would like more information about the council, please contact Britni Cherrington-Stoddart or Noelle Culler at 704-416-4822.

Ida Christian, right, from McClintock Middle School, is helping the kids at Rama Road Elementary expand their vocabulary with Scrabble. Jaliya Kelly, 9, left, and Tywaun Jenkins, 10, wait to put down their words.
Who knew that Scrabble was so fun?  Read the Observer article about Rama Elementary and McClintock Middle, and hone your Scrabble skills! Volunteers, come play with students!

WANT TO PLAY?

Communities In Schools’ Federico Rios says more adults are needed to play Scrabble with the CIS kids for the 2015-16 school year. If board games aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways you can volunteer with CIS. Contact Rios at frios@cischarlotte.org.

There's an app for that?

Chris Matthews, Park and Rec's Division Director of Nature Preserves and Natural Resources, recently gave a presentation about our county's streams. Did you know that 81% of our watersheds are considered 'impaired?' There is a free application (app) that will easily allows us to notify the proper authorities if we see things that might pollute or otherwise jeopardize our watershed. Here's the link.
How are the streams here in our Stonehaven backyard?
What is a watershed and what's mine?
