  May 2015
Welcome to our May 2015 email newsletter
Dear Baildon residents

Welcome to the May newsletter from Baildon Town Council.  May is a momentous month for all levels of local and national government as we go to the polls on 7th May. Please encourage all your family and friends to make sure to vote and have their say.

May also marks the end of the term of office of all the Town Councillors who have served over the past four years.  Councillors Andrews, Brook, Pennington, Taylor and I have decided to stand down at this time. The good news is that six of the current Councillors have stood for re-election and they will continue to steer Baildon Town Council in a positive direction.  The Council will be seeking to co-opt six additional Councillors. If you would be interested in this opportunity, please read the article below.  For myself, I can wholeheartedly recommend taking up the challenge of becoming a Councillor if you are keen to help Baildon to continuing to thrive as a caring, problem-solving, and sustainable community.

If you would like to know more about the work of the Town Council over the past year, we will be pleased to welcome you to the Annual Town Meeting at Ian Clough Hall on Wednesday 13th May. The meeting starts at 7.30pm but please come early to enjoy light refreshments and free musical entertainment from 7.00pm by Baildon’s very own Ladies Choir. At the meeting you will also hear from some of the young people who, thanks to Town Council funding, have formed a Youth Council, and about the planned re-opening of Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. You will find the full agenda for the Annual Town Meeting within this newsletter.  If you belong to a community organisation and would like to give a brief update about your work at the Town Meeting please just let us know on the night.

I would like to express thanks to all my fellow Councillors, to the small staff team of Baildon Town Council, and to all of the many residents who give time and energy to Baildon’s voluntary and community groups for working together to help to Build a Better Baildon.

Best wishes to all who will take the work of the Town Council forward into the coming four years.

Chris Flecknoe
Chair of Baildon Town Council

EVENTS IN MAY
POLLING DAY
Thursday 7th May 2015

Walking in and around Baildon
Gentle Walks around Baildon: Every week on Wednesday mornings Baildon Walking Group leads these gentle one hour walks. Meet at bottom of Springfield Road at 10.45am and then return to Wesleys for refreshments. All welcome.

Friends of the Bracken Hall Walks are free but donations are welcome. If you're coming by bus, the connection bus from Bradford and Shipley - TLC 658 - gets to Baildon Lucy Hall Drive/Prod Lane terminus in time for a 10.30am start. Meet John Dallas opposite Bracken Hall Countryside Centre. Please come prepared for the weather! Comfortable waterproof footwear; suitable clothing to keep you warm and dry; a supply of water and a snack; a hot drink if it’s chilly; sun screen and a hat if it’s hot. The nature of the countryside terrain means that most of these walks require a moderate level of fitness and agility and some sections have limited accessibility.

Friday 8th May: Baildon Boundary walk (10.9km/6.8mi). Walking down Prod lane and the tramway path (Dixon's Mill lane) to Roberts park and then along the River Aire, passing Baildon Bridge and ND Denso Nature Reserve to Esholt Lane. We then turn left, cross Otley Road and up to Tong Park village. From here we go to the war memorial, down to Tong Park dam and up through Hawksworth Spring woods to Sconce and then around the Baildon Moor boundary wall to Golcar farm, down through Glovershaw farm, Shipley Glen and back to Bracken Hall.

Friday 29th May: Esholt (16.8km/10.5mi). Walking via Shipley Glen, Baildon Bank, Baildon Village, Strawberry Fields, Moorside, Tong Park dam, through the golf course on the former public owned/council managed Lamb Springs Farm to Otley Road. We cross and head down towards Esholt via 'Bunkers Hill' and into the village. We return along Esholt Lane and along the River Aire footpath passing a massive tree, a variety of Italian Poplar, the Baildon/Idle/Thackley footbridge, ND Denso nature reserve to Baildon Bridge. We cross Otley Road here and walk along the riverside path to Saltaire where we join the Leeds and Liverpool Canal into Saltaire village and then through Roberts Park, up the Glen tramway bridleway to Shipley Glen, where our walk is complete.

For more guided and for self guided walks see the walks page on our website.

Community grants 2015 - 2016

The Town Council normally decides on grant applications three times a year - at its meetings in June; October; and February (subject to budgeted funds still being available throughout the year).

Application should be received by the Town Clerk no later than the three clear weeks prior to the date of the meeting.

Closing dates for applications 2015 – 2016: Friday 15th May; Friday 18th September; Friday 16th January.

Baildon Town Council is keen to contribute financial support to projects being developed by community organisations for purposes which strengthen the community and enhance the well-being of residents and their environment, within Baildon. Grants may complement other sources of funding and this is encouraged.

The closing date for applications for the June Council meeting is Friday 15th May.

You can download an application form (you can submit this by attaching to an email or in paper form) and guidelines. Please read the guidelines carefully and make sure your organisation meets the criteria. If you need further advice, please contact the Town Clerk on 01274 593169 or clerk@baildontowncouncil.gov.uk.
