BLACK & WHITE DIGEST No 007
A collection of progressive visual notes.

Women

"Females they gotta lot to say, feeemales about the world today" decreed the mighty Salt'n'Pepa
in 1985. In 2015 it's women who are shaping the culture around us and exerting influence
with style and class. In traditionally male dominated areas, ladies ("...all the ladies, louder now,
help me out"
) are stepping up. Suits us, as we create beautiful content of women, for women
with women.

Icons

After forests worth of print dedicated to catch-all male style heroes (Steve McQueen,
Bryan Ferry etc) comes a timely female equivalent. Published by Laurence King and written
by Josh Sims 'Icons of Womens Style' documents the Jane Birkins, Charlotte Gainsbourgs et al.
Our book would start on the premise of 50% French + 50% Japanese = 100% style.

Aries

Sofia Prantera has a hip midas touch, creating garments and brands that are effortless indie cool.
Her latest label is knowingly cute and obtuse, loved by women who understand style and
(counter)culture. A supergroup of collaborators including photographer Clare Shilland and
stylist Michele Rafferty ensure the pure representation.

Oodee

Cult photography publisher oodee has created the most simple and compelling series of
photo books, POV. Each annual edition features 5 young female photographers from a different
international city, offering a limited edition platform to present stories to the art & fashion cognoscenti. Beirut is up next having covered London, Tokyo, Cape Town and Bogota;
artists have included the brilliant Tara Darby, Lisa King and Karen Paulina Biswell.

Kim Gordon

Shattering all our allusions of alt rocks dream couple, Kim Gordon spills the beans on
Bad Thurston and reflects on the male-run indie music world in new book 'Girl in a band'.
Fortunately she is a multifaceted artist with an enviable set of phone contacts
(remember X-Girl?) and a wardrobe that launched a thousand A level art students. Important.

Jing Jing Shen

Recent RCA graduate, Jing Jing Shen approaches visual communication from the left/ from
the east. Using analogue photography to create graphic and 3D imagery, she is a brilliant
conceptual designer in the mould of Kawakubo or Margiela.

Gentlewoman

There is no shortage of women's print media on the shelves, much of it concerned only with
appearance; but up until The Gentlewoman there was no title that reflected and promoted
strong clever women as beautifully and as democratically as they do. Penny Martin's stewardship
as perfect in tone as Veronica Ditting's friendly, elegant art direction.

Studio Nicholson

Imagine a British womenswear collection that uses the best Italian cloth, the chic'est
French silhouettes, Japanese sophistication all wrapped up in London swagger.
The work we do with Nick Wakeman's label is our favourite commissioned image making:
creating design-aware portrait photography & pared down typography. Buy local.

Visual Art

Female representation with major gallerists is slowly increasing, tho the original rad' fems
The Guerrilla Girls work continues. On a different tact, Lisa Sigal's brilliant 3D works with their clean, multi media and cool observation float our boat. Whilst on our side of the pond, the recent exhibition by 'drawing water' artist Tania Kovats at Pippy Gouldsworth gallery, compiled her
wonderful, poetic expressions of the seas.

Talent

Modelling is one of the few careers where women's pay trumps mens. The careers can be short-lived so more power to the girls who also get behind the camera as the directed
become the directors. Helena Christensen famously knows her way around a Nikon, but
we recently shot uber cool Loren Denis who shows directing & modelling skills in front
and behind the lens.

Jane Shepherdson

Leading businesses from the front, developing brands, creating great product, inspiring teams..
welcome to the Jane Shepherdson formula in the fashion business. After huge success at the
Arcadia Group, Whistles has felt the Sheperdson affect and had graduated from high street
also-ran to epitome of modern good-taste British fashion.

Digital

As mens tumblers explode with beards, plaid shirts and selvedge denim, there are broader
more tasteful female-creative editorial sites to enjoy and reblog. Take Pittsburgh based
'That Kind of Woman' which presents aesthetically pleasing lifestyle content whilst avoiding
smugness or repetition. Or more issues (and fashion) based online media at The Pool,
including the all round goodness of Lauren Laverne.

Beauty

Although British-born, it's great to see under-represented models with Indian heritage being
endorsed by big designers and media; we are looking forward to working with timeless beauty
Neelam who starred in recent Burberry and Hunter campaigns. Watch her glow.

Innovator

Academic, entrepenuerial and philanthropic, Aracelli Camargo hosts start up businesses in metropolitan hotspots, whilst practicing in her specialism, Cognitive Neuroscience.
The Cube is her thoroughly modern workspace, eventspace, cultural exchange in Greenwich
Village, Union Square and Shoreditch housing tomorrow's innovators.

Hyke

Japanese womenswear designers, currently unavailable in Europe, but full of Nippon allure.
Out Sander-ing Sander, tick. Effortless cool, tick. Adidas colab, tick.

Architecture

Competing with countless male architects and practices, Sophie Hicks creates fashion retail
architecture with longevity and class. Part modernist, part maverick she enjoys a well respected
cult status.

Teams

We often find working with female photographers to shoot female fashion brings better results:
more respectful, more honest, more fun. We produce all the shoots that we direct, hence all
our teams are built with creativity, professionalism and relationships in mind.
Our jeans shoot in The Hamptons was shot by Gemma Booth, styled by Lotta Aspenberg,
cast by Sarah Bunter with beauty by Colleen Runne. Strong.
