If you are a poet, are considering writing poetry, or just enjoy hearing it read aloud, we will be having a poetry reading on the theme of Earth Day.

Read more about it here.

Popcorn and Poetry Day

This is a very informal event, and children of all ages may bring an original or another favorite poem or two to read out loud to the gathered group. Popcorn will of course be available too!

Local Grass Fed Beef Available

Have you tried the Montgomery Creek Ranch Beef available while supplies last at Manor Market?  Well, full disclosure, that tasty beef is another Doonan family enterprise we are so pleased to have supported and welcomed in the community!  The Owens Valley is better situated than many regions to supply the majority of its own food, even with drought and harsh weather, and we believe every step in that direction is a good one.  (If you need book recommendations on the topic of local food advantages, just ask Diane or use our Book Request form).

Jake and Matt Doonan started the business buying and growing regional steers and selling grass fed beef directly to consumers in 2008 while both were in High School.  Katie joined the enterprise in 2010 and added responsibility as both boys went off to college.  The Oney Family at Manor Market graciously added their support buying whole steers their talented meat cutter crew then packaged for the local fresh market. The meat continues to sell out quickly, so it appears to be advantageous for both sides! Jake has now graduated and completed his first season as owner of his own herd and is busy expanding the grass fed component.  He continues  selling beef directly (quarters and halves) as well as to Manor Market.

If you are interested in being on the email list for Montgomery Creek Ranch beef, please send your contact information to the store and we will forward it on.  In the meanwhile, stop by Manor Market and put beef on the menu for dinner!  We will help spread the word for other local food sources too, so please send us your ideas and contacts.

Used book sellers find all manner of things left behind in books…sometimes the items are even bookmarks!  This bookmark from the Scottish Widows Fund is a graphic treasure in very good condition.  I can’t tell for sure if it is a reprint or of original vintage, but I love it either way!  The company was founded in 1812 and is still going strong, so it could easily be a promotional reprint.   The tiny print on the back is Dolly Varden by W.P Frith, originally published in 1923, so this bookmark must date from the 1920’s as well.  Now the company has a “living brand” model who portrays the Scottish Widow.
