AwardsCongratulations to all the graduating seniors who will receive the 2015 UW-Stevens Point Chancellor's Leadership Award as well as the nine CPS students who are among the 2014-15 recipients of the Albertson Medallion Award. This is the highest award given by our university; less than one percent of the graduating classes has been selected. Marty's Message

Spring has an extraordinarily busy pace for a dean–just ask Becky! Becky is my wife. This time of year, we basically high-five each other when I pass through the door. A small part of me wants to feel bad for myself and complain about all of the events that I have to attend this time of year; however, I don’t and I can’t. That is because the events my staff and I attend hold some of the most rewarding and inspirational moments anyone could ask to be part of.

Just last week, I saw Professor Celine Klein’s Health Psychology class hold a real-life theatrical performance aimed at examining many of the pressures of college life–bullying, abuse, alcohol use, suicide. It was poignant, thought provoking and one of the best learning experiences I have ever seen.

Then I attended the School of Health Care Professions banquet where professors shared deep, personal stories about each award winner, making evident the student-teacher relationships made and their care for our students.

Later that evening, I attended the School of Business & Economics banquet, where more than $45,000 scholarship dollars were given out. The banquet was emceed by Tim Lau, president of Associated Bank and involved many, many local business leaders. These leaders are involved because they know how a strong business school and top students can impact their businesses and our region.

On Saturday, I participated in the Military Science Reeder’s Ruck where more than 100 hikers navigated an eight-mile trail with 35-pound RUCK sacks on their backs. We all did this to honor UWSP student and ROTC cadet Alex Reeder who was killed last year while riding his motorcycle. The pain I felt in my legs went away the moment I saw Alex’s mother cross the finish line. My pain was nothing in comparison to how I imagine her grief. This event meant a great deal to her and the Reeder family.

Each of these moments was made possible by many caring and hard-working faculty and staff. … so no, I won’t complain about the pace.

Becky understands, and now I hope you do, too.

Marty Loy,
Dean
