Accessible technologies and the education experience is a free webinar that will be hosted by ADCET in partnership with ATEND.
Access to online content is vital to education, whether its ensuring that students with disabilities have the assistive technologies they need or ensuring that online learning systems are compatible with such technologies. Dr Scott Hollier from Media Access Australia will share his professional and personal experience using assistive technologies in popular mainstream products to demonstrate the way in which popular computing and mobile devices have evolved, the challenges likely to be faced in accessing online content. And practical ways to support both users and producers.

NCSEHE 2015 Research Grants

The National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education has announced that 12 proposals have been selected for funding as part of the NCSEHE’s 2015 Student Equity in Higher Education Research Grants Program, for a total funding amount of $342,820.  

Of these 12 there are 5 directly relating to students with disability -  and they are:

  • Exploring the retention and performance of students with disability – Sue Kilpatrick, University of Tasmania
  • Best practice in supporting Indigenous students with disability in higher education – Michele Fleming, University of Canberra
  • Assessing descriptors of academic program inherent requirements – Andrew Harvey, La Trobe University
  • Supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Higher Education – Ceridwen Owen, University of Tasmania
  • Access and Barriers to Online Education for People with Disabilities – Mike Kent, Curtin University

I was talking to a friend and work colleague recently who also lives with a disability, hers sensory mine physical and we were discussing times when we had or hadn't disclosed our disabilities.    We both had similar stories about when we felt there were times that we believed disclosing would be fine and easy and other times when we knew if we did, it could perhaps work against us.  Read more »

Future Directions: Autism Forum  On 16th June, 2015 the NDCO Tasmanian Programme, in partnership with Autism Tasmania and ATEND Tasmanian state committee are holding a forum that will identify how to improve the journey into further education and employment for people on the autism spectrum.  Hear from a broad range of professional speakers with different experiences and viewpoints on how people on the autism spectrum can successfully navigate the journey into further education and employment. Further information »

Creating accessible documents: Word and PDF Vision Australia are offering a number of workshops where participants will learn both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to create accessible documents. These hands-on workshops will demonstrate how to create accessible documents using Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Gearing Up for Choice and Control  The Tasmanian biennial Gearing Up Expos will be held across the state in September. Hobart - 2 September, Launceston - 9 September and Burnie - 16 September.  The expo’s will offer an invaluable way for people with disability their families and carers to connect with service providers and explore what services and products are available to support their pathway, whether that is to employment, further education or community services. Further information »

2015 Round Table Conference The 2015 Conference of the Round Table on Information Access for People with Print Disabilities Inc. will be held in Adelaide from Saturday 2 to Tuesday 5 May.  Theme: “Dynamics of information access – Current and future contexts and designs” Further information »

Disability Employment Conference Australia’s Disability Employment Conference is presented by Disability Employment Australia. The 2015 Conference will be held from the 19th to the 20th August of 2015 in Sydney. Further information »
 
ANZSSA 2015  The next Australia and New Zealand Student Services Association Conference (ANZSSA) conference will be held in Hobart from the 6th - 9th of December 2015, at the Wrest Point Convention Centre. Further information »
 
EPHEA 2015  The Equity Practitioners in Higher Education Australasia (EPHEA)  2015 conference will be held at Deakin University Geelong Waterfront Campus, Victoria,  from 9–12 November.  The conference will focus on collaboration and creativity as key factors in repositioning the equity agenda into the future, and provide a platform for recognising and celebrating recent successes and innovations. Further information »

Improving Access to Graphics: National Online Survey of University Students with Vision Impairment  Blind and vision impaired students who have attended an Australian University in the last five years are invited to participate in a 10 minute online survey.  Participating in the survey on access to graphics in Higher Education by vision impaired students will help the researchers understand current practices in Australia and develop practical recommendations for improvement.Further informatio»

Government funding for disability conferences  Organisations that support Australians with disability will benefit from a $250,000 Abbott Government investment into disability-related conferences.   Minister Fifield said the funding will assist organisations with the expenses such as the costs of conference fees, accommodation and travel for people with disability, and the provision of  Auslan interpreters. Further information »

Supporting students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Higher Education  The University of Tasmania has received funding from the National Centre for Student Equity in Higher Education (NCSEHE) for an innovative multi-disciplinary research project that explores the unique experiences of a growing population of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Further information »

Longitudinal study of school leavers with autism The transition from school to adult life for people with ASD and their families is one of the most difficult periods to traverse as services are fragmented. However, this period remains poorly coordinated and not well understood. Therefore the main aim of this longitudinal study is to understand the process of transitioning from school to adult life for Australian students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families. Further information »
