Some exciting news to share: DC United, the local Major League Soccer team, is coming to the garden to celebrate Earth Day this Wednesday, from 4:30-6:30pm! There will be a flower planting of native perennials, a nutrition workshop by Mom Made Foods, and a chance to meet a DC United player, in addition to our usual garden maintenance tasks.
The plants we'll be planting are being provided by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) as a city-wide effort to "attract and support hummingbirds, butterflies (including Monarchs), bees and other creatures that are important players in a healthy ecosystem." DPR selected a site in each ward for the project, and the garden was selected to represent Ward 6! For additional info on the project, you can check out this document.
Inside the garden - Although Mother Nature has provided us with her liquid love on a regular basis, DPR turned the water on for the garden last week, so now all our bases are covered!
Our seedlings continued their emergence, as growth can be seen in nearly all the beds (even though we've spotted a few footprints as well).
The compost pile is also starting to heat up, which means we're on the right path to producing some great organic matter to use in the garden. Last Saturday, the pile's temperature was measured at 100 degrees (Fahrenheit), an increase of 20 degrees from the previous week, and brings the pile closer to its ideal range of 120-160 degrees.
Final note: if you are reading this now, you "officially" have no excuse to buy thyme, rosemary, or lavender from the store -- we have it growing in abundance, so please come get some! We even extended our Saturday work days an extra hour to help you out ;-) !
That's it for now,
see you in the garden!
Putting into your mouth what the Earth has grown is perhaps your most direct connection to [it].
