Joseph Rietman, CPC Named AIC National President

The AIC is proud to announce that Joseph Rietman, CPC has been named it's National President. 

Mr. Rietman, currently with Westfield Development in San Diego, CA, previously served as the AIC’s Vice-President, as well as on the AIC’s Constructor Certification Commission’s Board of Governors.  His term as National President began April 2015 and will run through April 2016, concluding at the 2016 AIC Annual Forum which will be held in Mr. Rietman’s home town of San Diego, CA.  Joe has been a member of the AIC for over 17 years and a Certified Professional Constructor for 5 years. 

Assuming other elected positions within the AIC include:

Vice-President Gregory Carender, CPC of PricewaterhouseCoopers of Atlanta, GA

Secretary David Dominguez, CPC, Project Manager with Ryan Companies in Des Moines, IA

Treasurer Bradley Monson, CPC, Capital Construction Project Manager with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Denver, CO

Outgoing President Paul Mattingly remarked “Joe will provide great leadership to the AIC over the next year.  He has a vision and passion for the AIC that will translate into great success for this organization.”

Also joining the Board of Directors is Ihab Saad, Department Chair at Northern Kentucky University and James Hogan, CPC of Houston Based PBK.  Gregory Carender and Saeed Goodman were each elected to a second term on the Board of Directors as well.

FMI Construction Outlook 1st Quarter 2015

Despite the long list of challenges the economy is facing, we expect total construction put in place to grow 8% in 2015 or somewhat faster than in 2014. The biggest challenge faced by contractors this year continues to be finding and retaining the best talent. Residential construction is expected to grow 9%, lodging, 16%; office construction, 11%; commercial construction, 15%; and manufacturing, 11%. Even though markets like education and health care will grow a more modest 3%and 4% respectively, continued slow growth is finally catching up to capacity in some parts of the country, and there is more urgency to grow the talent pool or some contractors will need to turn down new projects. That is hard to believe, but even at a snail’s pace, the economy is bound to get somewhere after a while, and it is now arriving.

The construction industry is catching up with where it left off in the growth period before the boom busted. However, that doesn’t mean the industry is about to repeat the same cycle. The oil and gas boom hasn’t totally fallen apart, but it is certainly slowing. That means the loss of some good jobs and wages; however, some of those who lost their jobs in the oil fields may be available to contractors in other parts of the country. Otherwise, the current growth cycle appears to be broad-based and sustainable.

Dear Mr. Ethics 

Dear Mr. Ethics,

We just inspected a pier that has been converted into a nightclub.  The owner noticed sagging in the western most corner of the night club that extends about 80 feet in the water. Our investigation revealed severe undermining of that section of the pier due to the complete rotting of 4 pilings that are supposed to support that area of the pier.  We sat down with the owner and reviewed our report which states that under load the pier is in imminent danger of collapsing.  The owner seemed very upset and said he was going to take care of the situation immediately.  We have no further services to perform.  We are now wondering if we should submit our report to City officials.  Would that be a violation of our contract with the owner if we did that?

Dear Pier,

I do not think violating your contract is your primary concern.  It sounds like you have identified a situation that is a threat to public safety.  You need to contact the owner and see if he will be submitting the report to the City.  If not, I think ethics says that you submit the report.  Your greater duty lies with the protection of the public.  By submitting the report you are putting the City on notice of a public safety issue and by doing so you could prevent someone from getting hurt or worse.  You may lose a client by taking this action, and maybe face a suit for breach of contract but I think those possible consequences are much less than the possible consequence of not preventing someone from being injured or worse.
