Supporting the Siblings...

of a Child with a Disability

Having a child with a disability changes the dynamics of the entire family, including the interaction between siblings. Typical siblings in these families are not often given the opportunity to express and deal with the struggles that come along with having a sibling with a disability, and often times parents do not know how to help their child cope with their frustrations or interact with their sibling.

Child specialist Lynsey Pearson, M.S. Ed, PC, has extensive experience working with children with disabilities as well as their siblings.  “It is imperative that we recognize the effect that having a sibling with a disability has on a child and give them the attention and understanding that they deserve. Not only does this support the child in the struggles they may be facing, but also fosters the development of a happy and healthy relationship between siblings,” says Pearson.

In this short video, Lynsey discusses how these children are affected and what can be done to help.

A 6-session workshop for siblings of children with disabilities

Starting May 14, Lynsey will offer a 6 session workshop for these children.  She will use activities, games and interactive play to encourage the children to explore and share their feelings with other kids who truly understand.  In addition to meeting others who are facing similar situations, your child will:
  • Discuss frustrations, joys and concerns related to having a sibling with a disability
  • Learn how to handle commonly experienced situations faced by siblings of children with disabilities
  • Have a safe place to talk, share and ask questions about their sibling's disability
When: Every other Thursday, starting May 14
Time:
6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Ages: 7 - 10
Where: 6797 N. High St. Suite 350
Fee: $360/6 sessions; can be paid in 2 installments

Space is limited to the first 8 children.  Call 614-888-9200 to reserve your child's spot.

An Introduction to TBRI

Trust Based Relationship Intervention

TBRI is designed for parents of children from “hard places,” but is applicable for all parents and families. It provides a holistic, multi-disciplinary, attachment-centered approach that focuses on EMPOWERMENT, CONNECTION and CORRECTION.

Join us at Directions Counseling Group on May 23 from 10:30 - 12 noon as Elizabeth Harper-Stross, MS, LSW, teaches how to strengthen your family bonds and mitigate problematic behaviors in your children. You will walk away knowing more about yourself and how to be a more effective parent.

This is a free workshop and space is limited, so call today to reserve your space:  614-888-9200.

Elizabeth Harper-Stross is a TBRI educator and in an independent contractor at Directions Counseling Group.  Since earning her Master of Social Work degree in 1998, she has spent her career in the adoption arena.  She now focuses on helping families thrive post-placement.

From Surviving to Thriving:

Supporting Families Going through Divorce or Separation

A 6-session workshop for parents & children

Helping your child(ren) adjust well to the changes that come with a divorce or separation is possibly your biggest concern. This type of transition is life altering and affects the entire family.

Starting July 16, the professionals at Directions Counseling Group will offer a comprehensive program that equips both parents and children to cope with the impact of divorce.

Each Thursday evening, parents can meet with professional counselor Kristin Batcheck, MA, PC-CR to learn how to discuss sensitive subjects, answer difficult questions and increase a child's resiliency during this season of change.

At the same time, children will take part in a workshop led by child specialist Emily Heselton, MA, PCC.  The kids will meet in our child-friendly play therapy room, giving them the opportunity to process their emotions, ask questions and gain tools to successfully navigate during turbulent times.

Whether you're recently separated or have been divorced for a while, we are here to help.

Dates: Thursdays, July 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 13, 20
