Nice & Good

Featuring Joana Stillwell May 14th - June 5th
Artist Reception Thurs, May 14th 6-9pm

Nice & Good is a solo exhibition of new and recent video work by Joana Stillwell. She uses humor, absurdity, or mystery as a way to balance and overcome the vulnerability and anxiety she experiences in downtime by using found and everyday materials such as balloons and gum. She performs meditative examinations through exploring the physicality of these playful materials as they resist, surprise, and provoke her. While she approaches her subject matter autobiographically, she aims to address a breadth of personhood highlighting elements of growth, healing, and fulfillment.

She invites the viewer to partake in similar meditations and will have a series of
"kits" available for purchase.

Joana Stillwell grew up around the Pacific Ocean in Hawaii, Japan, Guam, and Washington. She graduated with a BA in Art History and BFA in Photomedia from the University of Washington School of Art in 2012. She has shown throughout Seattle including with Interstitial, Gallery4Culture, SOIL, ArtsWest Gallery, and internationally at the NOW&AFTER Video Art Festival. Joana is an active member of SOIL Art Gallery.

New Ash Paintings
An off-site exhibit at COVEN SALON
Opens Saturday, May 16th, on view through July 31st

2306 24th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112

"My latest body of work is a direct reaction to the suffocations of modern culture. I am creating visual escapes into the wild....the materials have been carefully selected as they themselves are used as language; the paint is personally handmade from cannabis plant detritus, rendered into ash pigment only during the full moon, then applied to recycled extruded polypropylene. Using recycled materials to paint Pacific Northwest-themed scenes continues that cycle of reverence and uphold my intention - to escape into the wild with respect and wonder, while being aware of my footprint."
