Meditate in May

Meditation can help us embrace our worries, our fear, our anger; and that is very healing. We let our own natural capacity of healing do the work. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

The word "meditation" brings up a variety of ideas and mental images.  Some people use the term "meditating" to mean thinking or contemplating.  Others see meditation as relaxation or a time to day dream.  For some it brings up images of incense and long periods of sitting quietly cross-legged on a cushion.  What meditation is depends on the person practicing it.  We want to help you define your meditation practice.

The practice of meditation is bringing restful awareness to our present moment, regardless of what that moment looks like.  It doesn't have to look or feel a certain way.  Meditation practices are unique to each individual and their life circumstances. (Click here to listen to Jon Kabat Zinn talk about what meditation is).  Regardless of how you practice meditation, there are many benefits.  Meditation has been found to be correlated with:
  • decreased anxiety and depression
  • improved communication and relationships
  • increased creativity, short term memory and focus
  • decreased stress and symptoms of stress-related conditions
  • improved immune functioning and sense of well-being
At Omaha Integrative Care, we draw from both the widsom traditions and science to teach, guide and support meditation practices.  Meditation practices are a natural fit in an integrative health or wellness plan.  A meditation practice is best when it is guided by teachers and known techniques, but defined by the practitioner.  It is a partnership between student and teacher; healer and healed and empowers the student to become the teacher.

Meditation, particularly mindfulness meditation, is an integral part of what we do at Omaha Integrative Care.  Starting this May will be offering two meditation times every week.  Each time will start with a 1/2 hour of support and guidance in developing a meditation practice followed by an hour of sitting meditation. Participants are welcome to sit for part or all of the time.  These Mindfulness Meditation times will be on Tuesdays starting at 5 PM and Fridays starting at 9 AM.

We will be kicking off our invitation to Meditate in May with a Day of Mindfulness on Sunday May 3rd from 10 AM - 2 PM.  This is a free event which will include noble silence, meditation, mindful eating and mindful movement.  I hope to see you there!

Namaste,

Julie
