Peter Bazalgette heralds our opening night

Last night I had the pleasure of opening London Craft Week with Grayson Perry. Craft in England is a wonderfully inclusive artform, from passionate amateurs creating pieces at home right through to professionals producing some of the world’s most ornate and intricate works. Upon accepting the invitation to be part of London Craft Week’s inaugural event I took a moment to look ahead to what it has in store for both artists and audiences. There is a wealth of events and activities for people to participate in, from assembling a watch movement through to engraving at Vacheron Constantin's London boutique and even a chance to create perfumes at Ormonde Jayne's studio. One that particularly caught my eye is Mo Coppoletta’s tattoo parlour, giving an insight into this fascinating and historic art-form (though I’m not sure I’ll have one done at my age). And The Crafted City, at Contemporary Applied Arts in Southwark Street. Funded through the Arts Council’s Grants for the arts, this temporary pavilion promises to be a special experience, featuring and celebrating some of our very best makers.
