Learning from alcohol project in Barcelona

Alcohol Project Officer Rod Watson and Darzi Fellow Julia Knight from the Health Innovation Network Alcohol Team recently travelled to Barcelona to meet members of the ‘Beveu Menys’ (Drink Less) programme team and learn from an area where the Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) initiative is being successfully delivered, with strong evidence of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of IBA in reducing high risk alcohol consumption.

The programme, included in the Catalonia Health Plan, seeks to give primary healthcare professionals the expertise to effectively deliver early identification screening and appropriate brief interventions with risky drinkers. In the early phase of the programme, staff from specialist alcohol services trained staff in primary health care to deliver Alcohol IBA and explain the patient pathway into specialist services. The next phase involved primary care leads from each practice being trained as ‘trainers’; these individuals then took responsibility for training the remaining staff in their primary care facility. GPs who we visited spoke about how they have been also able to broaden the treatment options (including detox programmes) that they can deliver in primary practice.

The programme, unlike some models in the NHS, takes a universal approach to screening of patients for alcohol related problems. Everyone over the age of 16 years is screened and given appropriate advice every two years. Since implementation of the programme, screening rates have increased from 22% to 45% (from 2000 – 2013). An increase in the number of people referred to the Addictions Centre has also been seen.

Spanish colleagues highlighted the individual, personnel and organisational level facilitators and barriers that need to be considered when implementing a public health programme of this type. The Beveu Menys programme team have developed different strategies to maintain ongoing training and support that you can read about on our website together with key learning points that we hope to translate into models for improved delivery and reporting in South London.  Read more

Smartphone app to help 'risky drinkers'

The CLAHRC (Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care) South London team of alcohol researchers along with the Alcohol Team at the Health Innovation Network are developing a smartphone app. The app could help large numbers of young adults invest in their future health by cutting down the amount of alcohol they consume. The app, to be designed like a game, will enable people to assess whether the amount of alcohol they drink puts them at risk of developing health problems – and encourage them to measure and reduce their intake.
