Top Five 2015 Conference Take-Aways!

Three weeks ago, it was my pleasure to join my organizing colleagues at the annual conference for the National Association of Professional Organizers. The organizing industry is now 30 years old. Hard to believe we are 4,000 strong (nationally), and still growing!

Since my return, I have been asked by many of you, "How was the conference?" In a word, organized! The clear upsides to attending an event organized by organizers are a) the attention to detail in planning, and b) the strict adherence to timetable. We start on time, we finish on time, we follow our schedule - precisely! And we're all very happy about that. (I mean, exceptionally happy. For organizers, there is joy in watching a well-planned system unfold without a hitch.)

But no one is actually surprised that organizers would execute an organized conference. What DID surprise me were the quality take-aways and actionable information I gleaned by attending. I feel confident in my ability to put these babies to work; it's my hope they'll help you in your business as well!

Top 5 Take-Aways from 2015 Organizers' Conference

# 5: The average American home contains more than 300,000 things. Maybe you can part with a few?

# 4: One minute is longer than you think. Seize the moment by acting on what you CAN, not thinking about what you can't do.

# 3: Looking at pictures of puppies is scientifically proven to reduce stress and lift your mood. That doesn't mean do it incessantly, but give yourself one minute (see #4) of indulgence if you feel stressed or down.

# 2: Marketing is flirting - evoking emotion in your market. The feeling your work evokes in your clients is what you really offer. Convey it in every. thing. you. do.

# 1: Stagnation is scarier than change. Get moving towards your goals TODAY!

Ask the Organizer

Q: Help! My email inbox is literally about to explode!

A: Firstly, do you mean "literally?" Because if so, get yourself out of there!

In all seriousness, the amount of email we receive each day is staggering. And the number that we store in our inboxes is even more so. But storing thousands in your inbox is not the answer!

Your email inbox is not a storage space. It is a work space. It is the place for you to receive, sort, briefly act upon, and compose.

The answer to the exploding inbox is threefold:
1. Don't waste time on old stuff. Move anything older than 6 months to one big folder, and organize only more recent emails (that you actually need to look at). You can go back to the "old emails" folder later, if you have time...which you probably won't, because more emails keep coming in.

2. Mark as spam or unsubscribe from junk. Get yourself off lists you never read, or at least keep them from hitting your inbox.

3. Establish an email filing system (yep, just like for papers and electronic docs) to use for incoming emails. Then...use it!

Email explosions, begone!
