Students of the Czech and Slovak School will once again delight the audiences with their performances at the Slovak Embassy on May 9, 2015 during the annual EU Embassies’ Open House Day. They will be performing at 11:15 AM.
Each year EU Delegation organizes the EU Embassies’ Open House - a day of family fun, food, culture and more. Each EU embassy opens its doors to the public and offers a rare look inside the buildings and provides a unique opportunity to experience the country’s cultural heritage and national traditions.

“Memorial Olgy Hudlicke: Horsky Chodecky Marathon” na Little Devils Stairs a Appalachian Trail, Shenandoah national Park, Saturday - May 9th 2015.
The hiking mountain marathon is in memory of Olga Hudlicka, born 7.11.1926, died 5.3.2014. Olga Hudlicka, a member of Sokol Olomouc in her youth and of the American Sokol of Washington in her old age, was a world-renown scientist and the founder cook of the ASW Burke Mountain winter ski trips, from 2000-2007 its chief cook, from 2001-2005 its only cook, and until 2013 the assistant cook and the most rigorous inspector of the cuisine.
She had enough energy, to quote a 30 year old PhD student, “to leave all nuclear reactors in the dust”. She applied her energy and imagination equally to science and to cooking for hungry skiers. She was 74 when, in 2000, she was asked whether she would be willing to cook for a few people on a ski trip. The few turned out to be 36. Within a week, she had the menu for the whole week, within 2 weeks, the exact amounts of supplies to be purchased. And then she cooked. The week was a resounding success, in large measure due to the good evening mood that came with her superb cooking – for all those 36 people.
As all those who have participated in the Burke ski trips know, the dinner is the focus of the evening part of the trip, which is as important a “social glue” of the trip as the day time skiing is. The pattern we have followed on the trips these last 15 years is the pattern that Olga set. Nowadays, families take turn, one or more family per night. Between 2000-2007, there was one cook for all for the whole week, Olga. She published her last book and got her last scientific award in 2008 when she was 82. She cooked her last supper at Burke in 2013, aged 86.

This annual all-day event will once again be held at Bluemont Park in Arlington, VA. Competition will consist of singles, by gender and various age groups (depending on attendance), and doubles – winners receive trophies. Food and refreshment are always on hand for participants and spectators alike.

Youth Summer Camp at Modrá skala – Blue Rock, Monongahela National Forest is a popular summer activity for families with young children.
The idea for a youth summer camp came about in 2002. Sokol Washington parents with small children were seeking a summer activity that would expose their children to a variety of outdoor adventures and sports – climbing, camping, hiking, swimming, canoeing. They also were hoping to give their children an opportunity to socialize with Moravian, Czech and Slovak peers at camp fires, with songs and story-telling time, and with themes that would foster their Czech and Slovak language skills and appreciation of their heritage.

Learn to Play the Fujara & Koncovka, Connect with your Slovak Roots, & Have the Best Vacation of Your Life!
Are you one of the many people of Slovak heritage who feel that they are losing touch with their roots amid the hustle and bustle of daily life? Once I also felt I was drifting farther and farther away from the culture and the soul of the (then) Czechoslovakia I left so many years ago, when an unexpected gift from a Slovak friend changed that and more – it changed my life! The gift was my first Slovak fujara, and I immediately fell in love with its rich sound and the feelings it evoked of my distant homeland.
Fast forward to the present time: I now have a hundred of performances on the fujara and other Slovak overtone flutes under my belt, at many festivals, and in workshops in many states and in several countries, and I am offering you the opportunity to find that deep inner voice of Slovak culture yourselves by learning to play the fujara and another wonderful flute, the koncovka, yourself.
I teach a one-week course on the beautiful campus of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, during Traditions Week 1 of the annual Common Ground on the Hill program. This year, my class will be held from June 29 – July 3, 2015. Everyone is welcome. No music experience is necessary to take this class. In all my years of teaching it, by the end of the week, every student was playing two traditional Slovak songs, and Amazing Grace on the fujara, and everybody was playing the koncovka, even jamming the blues on it.
If you do not have a fujara, no problem. There will be loaner instruments for you; and everybody can get a koncovka at the class. This class is not available anywhere else in the country. Some students come from far away, some take more classes featuring other instruments, and some come here with their spouses for an activity-filled week. There are concerts every day, and people are jamming together at many places …. It was the best vacation of my life, and it could be yours, too.

This marks the fourth year of the Film and Beer Series at Bistro Bohem. The series this year focuses on the work of acclaimed screenwriter and actor Zdeněk Svěrák, who is renowned for the Oscar-winning film Kolya. All of the films will screen in Czech with English subtitles.
