Lunch News: Do you have outstanding lunch bills?  Please remember to add money to your child's account. We would prefer to not have to enforce the District policy of a fruit and milk for any account that does not have the necessary funds.

Office News: Margaret Dawson from room 203 will be featuring her collection of tiny animals.  If you would like a collection added to the Showcase at Lawton, contact Laura Thomas in the office.

Nurse News: The Tdap vaccine is required for students entering sixth grade who are age 11 or older and have not already received this vaccine.  Click here for more information.

Yearbook Order Forms and Information
Yearbook order forms are now available in the Main Office.  Yearbooks are $15.  Deadline to order is May 15.  If you would like a yearbook but cannot afford one, please contact Laura in the office.  These requests will be kept confidential.
Staff and Student Teacher Updates
You may have seen Kyle Stewart and Elizabeth Tiedemann recently in our classrooms and hallways. Ms. Tiedemann has joined our Special Education Team as a long term substitute for the remainder of the year. She attended Northern Michigan University in the Upper Peninsula. Ms. Tiedemann graduated with a major in Special Education, with a focus on emotion and behavior impairments and a minor in English/Language Arts. She moved to Seattle in September and has been a substitute teacher in many Seattle Public Schools.  Also, Kyle Stewart will be student teaching in Ms. Hatley's kindergarten classroom while he finishes his degree in education through City University of Seattle. The staff and students are excited to add these two staff members during our busiest stretch of the school year!
Lawton Library Volunteer Opportunities
Do you love books and reading? Want to find out what the kids are into these days? Volunteer in the library!

Shelving/organizing
The library needs one or two people to shelve books and tidy up the library. If you can commit to one to two hours a week for the remainder of the school year, please contact Mrs. Gallegos at ahgallegos@seattleschools.org.
Book Fairs
All of the library’s funding comes from PTA grants and book fairs. The spring book fair is scheduled for May 18th-21st. The library needs a volunteer to be a point person for the Usborne booksellers during the last two days of the fair. This will likely take 10-30 minutes each day. We also need someone to help organize the Fall Scholastic book fair. This could be a much larger job, and involves coordinating set-up, volunteer shifts and sales. This is also an opportunity to get creative with fun reading promotions for kids.
Please contact Mrs. Gallegos at ahgallegos@seattleschools.org if you have questions or would like to help.

Young Author's Day Co-Chair Needed
Thank you Margaret Bolger for volunteering, it would be great to have another parent work alongside Margaret in preparation for this Lawton tradition on June 5th.  Young Author's Day brings various ages of Lawton students together to share their written works with new friends, teachers, and parents in a small group environment.  The co-chairs will create a sign-up genius for the event, organize parent volunteers for the event, order/pick-up bookmarks from Costco, prepare packets for each group, work alongside Lawton teachers/staff from the literacy committee and be available to help on the event date.  Contact Margaret Bolger and Mr. Terry if you would like to co-chair the event.
 Microwave Needed
Do you have a microwave in good condition that you no longer need? A Lawton family requested one through our school’s winter holiday outreach program. Unfortunately, this gift request went unfulfilled and the family is still in search of a microwave. If you have one that you would like to donate, please contact Alice Shepard
McClure Middle School PTSA Needs a Treasurer
Is your child heading off to McClure next year?  McClure Middle School's PTSA is looking for a treasurer. Being treasurer is a great way to be involved in the school if you can't be there during school hours. Just a few hours a month of your time can make a world of difference. This role would ideally suit someone who has a background in finance and is familiar with profit and loss and balance sheets. QuickBooks knowledge would be a bonus, as would non-profit accounting. Plus you get to work with our lovely PTSA people. If this is something you are interested in please email treasurer@mccluremavericks.org and find out more about this position by clicking here.
Lawton Move-A-Thon Coming May 29th
Get your student excited to move-it, move-it at the annual Move-A-Thon! This year's celebration of getting out and moving will serve as a fundraiser for our new playground. For families new to the school or for those who have not been able to come for the fun, the kids move as much as they can, walking, jogging, and having fun around the course while being supported by the whole school community. This year students will get pledges from family, friends, and neighbors and then they'll bring their body to move it! More information about volunteer sign-ups, business sponsorships, and pledge instructions will be provided after spring break.
Kindergarten Jump Start August 17 - 21
Lawton is participating as part in Jump Start the week of August 17-21. Jump Start is a way to help children and their families begin school ready – and excited – about learning. It is a weeklong experience for new kindergartners and their families to learn about their new school. Children will become familiar with the school building, staff, and typical school-day activities and practices. Jump Start will run for five consecutive half-days (usually 9 a.m. to noon). Parents/guardians will have a chance to meet with the school principal during the week. Interpreters will be available for children who are English-language learners. Transportation is not provided. Families who have enrolled their child in kindergarten will receive a letter from their assigned school inviting them to participate. Families will need to reserve a space and return needed health and safety forms ahead of time. Click here for more information.
Walking School Bus Route #5 Needs a Route Leader
We need a new Route Leader for Walking School Bus Route #5, the route starts at 34th and West Government Way at 8:00am.  A Route Leader is responsible to be visible by wearing a yellow reflective "Lawton Walking School Bus" vest.  At the start of each walk to school, remind the children of the Three Safety Rules: "Walk (Don't Run), Stay on the Sidewalk, Walk Sensibly (No Horsing Around)." Walking School Bus Routes should walk together as a group.  If necessary, put a parent or an older child at the front with instructions to slow everyone down so the last person is not too far behind.  Cross side streets as a group, by allowing slower walkers to catch up before crossing.  Make Eye contact with stopped drivers and be sure they are letting you cross before entering the road.  Cross main streets at a crosswalk or intersection. If you are available to be a Walking School Bus Route Leader, please contact Mr. Terry. If you would like to read more information about the Walking School Bus, click here.
