Why Labs? Empowering citizens as drivers of innovation.
In the context of the EIP SCC ‘Citizen Focus’ action cluster, the city of Barcelona and the European Network of Living Labs co-organized on April 15th in Brussels a workshop called “Why Labs? Empowering citizens as drivers of innovation in Smart Cities”. The workshop, moderated by Mr. Jarmo Eskelinen (CEO of Forum Virium Helsinki and Chair of ENoLL), brought together cities and city stakeholders that had implemented or planned actions to empower citizens in urban innovation projects. It was an appreciated opportunity of dialogue and exchange for around 60 attendees coming from both public & private sector. The workshop wrapped up with the sentence: “Why labs? We need to consider the integrator function for different parts of the innovation chain in cities”. Would you like to know more? Read an internal ENoLL report here. Look at the pictures, watch Jarmo Eskelinen and Pieter Ballon’s presentations and access their presentations here. Find the official “Citizen Focus” action cluster report here.

Les Labos, a Living Lab exhibition at La Biennale in Saint-Etienne
From 12 March to 12 April 2015, Saint Étienne in France was one of the world capitals of design! Cité du design, design-focused member of ENoLL, organised its 9th International Biennial devoted to prospective and innovative design. Over 100,000 visitors visited the La Biennale and its over sixty exhibitions and events (symposia, talks, forums, round tables). One of the most appreciated initiatives was Les Labos, exhibition area used by companies and public institutes to test products/services with users. The Labos had the ambition to bridge the gap between users and companies thanks to an innovation tool based on user experience. Then, during La Biennale ENoLL and the Design for Europe initiative co-organised “Design for Europe – Making a connection”, a session on design and Living Lab methodologies that took place on April 1st.  Read our news and discover more on the event website (in French).
