Invest in a Living Springs Youth Disciple!

Become a Youth Gathering Shareholder -
D2, LLC

Over the past few months, our ELCA National Youth Gathering participants and parents have been very busy preparing for the Gathering. We meet each month for a devotion to learn about this history of Detroit and how we can be Christ-like servants while we are there! Sara Levitt, Andrew Levitt, Laura Stuart, Sam Arnold, Dylan Horan, and Patrick Lay are our youth participants with Laura Dunklin, Wes Levitt, and Shirley Laingen going as chaperones.  Pastor Eric is also attending as our SC Synod Proclaim Story Day coordinator.
This past Sunday, we had the IPO for our new “company” D2, LLC. The title stands for Detroit Disciples, Lutherans Loving Community.  Shares are available for $5 each – youth are available after each service in the narthex.  Funds will be used to help cover the cost of food, travel, and lodging for the trip.  We have already had 313 shares donated toward our goal of 500!   Shareholders will receive updates from our youth – and be invited to attend a Shareholders Banquet after the gathering.   Please keep our Living Springs Detroit Disciples in your prayers as they continue to prepare for this awesome faith-enriching experience!

Mother's Day @ Rice Estates

Saturday, May 9

In keeping with the tradition, we will be honoring all the women at the Rice Estates with a flower in a bud vase on the Saturday before Mother’s Day (May 9).  We will meet in the administration building and commute to the Rice Estates at 10:00 am (or meet us at Rice Estates). The folks at Rice Estates especially enjoy the cards that the preschool children create and love when the children deliver them in person, so an invitation goes out to all our parents with small children to come join us for a very rewarding experience.  If anyone has bud vases, we would greatly appreciate them.  Contact Karen Kranz for information.

Lutheran Men In Mission Quarterly Meeting

Monday, May 11

We wanted to invite you to our next quarterly meeting on Monday May 11th at Living Springs Lutheran Church. The evening begins at 7pm with fellowship and dinner. Then, we will handle a little bit of business, have a devotion, and then our guest speaker. Tim Crout, our National Vice President of LMIM will be bringing us a great program!

Women’s Sunday

Sunday, May 17

Sunday, May 17, will be Women’s Sunday at Living Springs as we celebrate the ministry of women of all ages (men, too!) in our congregation.  We will bless the quilts that are sent on to Lutheran World Relief and other social agencies closer to home as well as honor six members with Life Memberships in the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary Auxiliary.  Living Springs has now honored 128 of our members with $100 gifts given in their honor. If you happen to be a former honoree, try to wear your Seminary Auxiliary pin that Sunday and greet these six new members. Cake and Punch will be served after the 10:45 service to honor the work of all our hands.
This is also the Sunday of the year, May 17, when we women are all invited to promote the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) church wide with an offering that we can share with our congregation, our SC Synod women and the ELCA church wide projects. This includes scholarships for women, Lutheran World Relief projects, programming, the magazine Gather, the emagazine CAFÉ (free on the internet), Bible Studies, and more needs we project for here at Living Springs.

GraceWorks - June 7-12

Columbia Area Lutheran Servant Blitz

Grades 6-12...Sign Up Now!
Adult Helpers Also Needed

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for works of grace, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” Ephesians 2:10
Youth from Living Springs will be participating this summer in GraceWorks. GraceWorks is a week-long servant camp for middle and high school Lutheran youth that enables them to deepen their relationships with Jesus, the church, and each other through their partnership with local agencies serving vulnerable children and adults in the Midlands of South Carolina. GraceWorks will have a kick-off on Sunday, June 7, and then will hit the streets that Monday through Friday, June 8-12.
Youth completing grades 6-12 may register directly.  Look for our group - Living Springs Youth.  Cost for the entire week, including lunches, is only $50.
This year’s theme for GraceWorks is, “Created for Works of Grace.” With a firm belief in God’s grace that permeates our lives, we are sent into the world to do the works of God’s kingdom.
GraceWorks is hoping that you will join us in these “works of grace.” First, if you are an adult and can devote at least one full day or half day to join us during our week (June 8-12, M-F), then please contact Pastor Eric or the office no later than May 11. Second, if you have free passes to Riverbanks Zoo, we would appreciate having them for our outing at the end of the week.
Finally and most importantly, we would appreciate your prayers for us. Please pray that God will be at work both in our lives and in the lives of those whom we will accompany. God is doing new and great things in the Midlands of South Carolina through all these youth, and we hope that you will consider joining us in this ministry!

Nepal Area Earthquake

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

We have seen the devastating images and stories coming out of Nepal. Sections of Kathmandu, the nation’s capital, and surrounding areas lie in rubble. More than 3,000 people have lost their lives, and the number continues to rise as officials make their way through rural communities. Historic buildings and houses have been leveled; roads are destroyed. The injured and their families line the streets in front of hospitals and caregivers. The need for food, water, medical care, blankets and shelter is great.

Please help now with a gift.

Lutheran Disaster Response is actively networking with partners such as The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Lutheran World Relief and the ACT Alliance who are already on the ground. LWF’s office in Kathmandu escaped the worst of the impact of the quake and has already launched a large-scale emergency response.

Our church is committed to walking with the people of Nepal, India, and Bangladesh as they navigate every part of this disaster relief and recovery process – even long after the dust settles and media attention fades.

Your gifts are needed now. Every gift designated to the "Nepal Area Earthquake" through Lutheran Disaster Response will be used entirely – 100 percent – to help those impacted by the quake rebuild their lives and livelihoods. You can help provide comfort, healing and hope in the midst of destruction.

Thank you for your gifts, your prayers and your partnership.

In service to Christ,

i

Blossoms of Hope

Saturday, May 9

Service is one of the many ways the church shares the power of hope and the Holy Spirit with others. On Saturday, May 9, congregations have the opportunity to share the beauty of spring and the power of hope with those served by LSC by participating in Blossoms of Hope. Congregations are invited to bring fresh flowers or plants to your local LSC ministry or participate in a landscaping project at one of these locations. This is a great service project for youth groups, Sunday School classes, or congregations as a whole! Please refer to the attached flyer for more information or contact Michelle Chaffee at mchaffee@LSCarolinas.net or (704) 603-1696. Thank you for supporting the LSC ministry.

Lutheran Marriage Enrichment Seminar
& Date Night Event

Saturday, May 16

On Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 to 5:00 at Ebenezer Lutheran, married or engaged couples are invited to attend a Marriage Enrichment Event on the theme, "The Seven Principles of a Lifelong Marriage." Date Night: The seminar leader is recommending a date night on the town for all couples who attend. Some may want to make it a date weekend. Contact Staybridge Suites in downtown Columbia at 1-866-599-6674 for special rates…tell them you are attending the “Lutheran Marriage Enrichment Seminar.”

Lessons for Sunday, May 10

First Reading: Acts 10:44–48

While Peter shares the good news of Jesus with a Gentile soldier and his family, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Recognizing that the Spirit works inclusively in the lives of both Jews and Gentiles, Peter commands that these Gentiles also be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Psalm (ELW): Psalm 98

Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands. (Ps. 98:4)

Second Reading: 1 John 5:1–6

God's children believe that Jesus is the Messiah and love God by keeping God's commandments. Thus the world is conquered not through military might but through love and faith.

Gospel: John 15:9-17

On the night of his arrest, Jesus delivers a final testimony to his disciples to help them in the days ahead. Here, he repeats the most important of all his commands, that they love one another.
