96th Commencement set for Friday
Nearly 1,000 students have been invited to celebrate the beginning of the rest of their lives at Bemidji State University’s 96th Commencement. The May 8 ceremony begins at 2 p.m. at Sanford Center.

Celebrating centuries of service
Sixty-eight Bemidji State employees with a combined total of 935 years of service were recognized for their contributions to BSU at the university’s annual Emeriti, Retirement and Milestone ceremony in the Beaux Arts Ballroom.

Nepalese students at Bemidji State University are raising funds on campus this week to support victims of the devastating earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Optivation wins grant to provide aquaponics training for Lueken's
Optivation, a custom college and outreach training program jointly operated by BSU and Northwest Technical College, has won a $49,572 grant from the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership program to develop specialized training for employees of Bemidji-based Lueken’s Inc.

BSU opens partnership center in Mayflower building
President Hanson was joined by BSU staff, faculty and students at a May 1 ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the debut of Bemidji's newly renovated Mayflower Building. The high-technology facility will provide co-working and collaboration space for Bemidji-area entrepreneurs and other business professionals. The building is home to a new BSU office for community partnerships, which will host BSU's internship programs, Marketing Assistance and Research Solutions and other programs on a rotating basis.

New program forges interdisciplinary approach to leadership
Beginning this fall, BSU students can complete a 21-credit minor or a 12-credit certificate in leadership, enhancing their academic credentials and hopefully strengthening communities where they live and work.
Developed by a seven-member faculty Leadership Council, the program combines existing electives in fields such as political science, sociology, Indian studies and business with new core courses in leadership theory and ethics.

Lakeside Luncheon acknowledges impact of local support
President Hanson illustrated how the Imagine Tomorrow campaign has impacted the university's ability to provide scholarships for students during BSU’s annual Lakeside Luncheon, April 23 at Sanford Center
During his “State of the University†presentation during the luncheon, Hanson explained how scholarship funding at BSU has nearly doubled, from about $700,000 in fiscal year 2011 to almost $1.3 million this year as a result of the campaign. That total is expected to continue increasing as the campaign, which to date has raised nearly $33 million, progresses toward its $35 million goal.

BSU students present a day of Beowulf, Hobbits and politics
Dr. Stephen Vogt, chief investment officer of Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc., gave the keynote address at the 16th annual Student Scholarship & Creative Achievement Conference. More than 200 students representing all disciplines at the university presented their work on topics including an examination of the use of boar’s head symbols in Beowulf, an exploration of the inspiration behind J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe and a look at the evolving role of social issues in American politics.
Eleven students who participated in the conference also shared their work at the Fourth Annual Minnesota Conference of Undergraduate Scholarly and Creative Activity, April 13 at Winona State.

Chamber Singers play Carnegie Hall
The Bemidji Chamber Singers were featured in Gotham Sings!, an April 18 choral music showcase held on the Perelman Stage of historic Carnegie Hall in New York City.
“Performing at Carnegie Hall is a bucket list-type activity for musicians,†said Dr. Brad Logan, professor of music and director of the Chamber Singers. “The opportunity to perform in an internationally-recognized hall of excellence is something that brings great fulfillment to both the singer and the director.â€

Beaver hockey unveils 2015-16 schedules
Eighteen regular-season home games, 11 games versus 2015 NCAA Tournament participants and the defense of its North Star College Cup title highlight BSU's 36-game 2015-16 men’s ice hockey schedule.
Women’s hockey looks to build upon its record-setting 2014-15 campaign with a 34-game 2015-16 schedule, 18 of which will be played at Sanford Center. Bemidji State kicks off its regular season against Robert Morris University at Sanford Center on Sept. 25-26.
