Dear Friends,
On Thursday, April 30th, 2015, we said goodbye to our beautiful Chabine for the last time here on earth. We are deeply mourning the loss of a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, and would like to take a moment to update you all on what occurred, as we know she was loved and cared for by many both here in Haiti and around the world.
Chabine grew up a very small village near Cap-Haitian in northern Haiti as one of six children. Her father left the family when she was very young, devastating the family and leaving them with very few options. Chabine's mother brought her and her brother to Port-au-Prince in search of a brighter future, yet they tragically ended up begging on the streets until Chabine came to the Lighthouse.
Over the years, Chabine blossomed into a bright and beautiful young woman. She graduated from our girls' home two years ago, and had since been working at our Guesthouse where she was recently promoted to Housekeeping Supervisor.
Last week, Chabine became very ill with a fever, vomiting, insomnia, a loss of appetite, and reported spiritual attacks when she was sleeping. We offered to take her to the hospital, but her mother decided to take Chabine back to the countryside to the village where they were from. Over the course of the week, we heard reports that she was becoming progressively ill, and made several attempts to have her brought back to Port-au-Prince where she could receive medical treatment and prayer. On Wednesday, April 29th, her mother agreed to bring her back, but by then, it was too late. Chabine died on Thursday shortly after arriving back into the Port-au-Prince area. She was nineteen years old.
While we do not have all the answers, we rest in the promises of His word in Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." We do not understand, but we choose to trust that the Lord is sovereign, and His wisdom far surpasses ours. We rejoice in the time that we did have with Chabine, and in knowing that she was introduced to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your outpouring of love and prayers during this difficult time. Please continue to pray for Chabine's family, the staff and children of Child Hope, and the entire community that has been effected by this loss. We leave you with 2nd Thessalonians 2:16-17, "May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word."
