Your favourite single is a work of art – or could be...
A much-loved 7” single, its paper sleeve dog-eared by repeated handling, is grist to the mill for artist Morgan Howell. Working from actual examples, he recreates treasured singles in giant format, hand-painting the details and distressing the sleeve to reproduce every tear and scuff mark. While Morgan’s artworks evoke nostalgia, they also tap into the excitement surrounding the current rediscovery of vinyl’s unique quality. Morgan’s work is on permanent display in Radio 2’s green room, and regularly attracts the interest of celebrities, some of whom are now collectors of these iconic pieces. 'Born to Run' and 'A Hard day's Night', pictured below, have been sent directly to Reuben Colley Fine Art from Radio 2.
It takes Morgan several weeks to complete one of his paintings, and he only makes one version of any record. He also works to commission, and will faithfully reproduce your own favourite single – providing it’s not one he’s already tackled! Original paintings and commissions cost £9,600.
Morgan personally reproduces each painting in a signed limited edition of nine, costing £2,000 for a ‘supersize’ print and £595 for an ‘oversize’ version. These prints are 3D assemblies, put together in the same way as the originals.
