The Friends of the Millbrook Library are getting back together, and would love to include you - whether you’d like to volunteer to do a little or a lot! There are no dues, no huge obligations, just an interest to be involved with other fun people to help make the library the important community center it is!
OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
Support and encourage the promotion of the library as a center for community and culture
Aid the library in public relations
Help generate financial assistance to enable the library to offer services above and beyond the budget
Encourage giving to the library through gifts, memorials and endowments
Join us for a day filled with author book signings, poetry, a Young Writer’s Showcase, spotlights on writers and lively panel discussions featuring over 30 authors. Highlights of the day will include:
A conversation with Rex Smith, editor of the Times Union and host of The Media Project on WAMC Public Radio, on the challenging subject of ethical journalism. Later he will join the panel discussion on journalism featuring executive editors
A spotlight on memoirs with Marion Roach of The Memoir Project – Memoirama.
A discussion by Jim DeFelice, author of the acclaimed book about military sniper Chris Kyle, American Sniper. He will talk about that and his new book, American Wife.
A Trends in Cookbooks panel featuring James Beard Award nominees Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarborough, authors of The Great Big Pressure Cookbook, as well as Dana Cowin, editor of Food & Wine magazine.

Off The Wall Gallery May Artist
Lori Adams Saturday, May 9 from 2 pm-4pm
Please join us for an opening reception and gallery talk for May Gallery Artist Lori Adams on Saturday, May 9 at 2 pm. Lori Adams is a commercial and fine art photographer in Hopewell Junction area of the Hudson Valley, about 60 miles north of New York City. She has been photographing since the age of 13. She is experienced with black and white and color darkroom printing and digital printing; and with 35mm, medium format and large format film and digital photography. (Yes, a large format digital camera exists.) She documents events, creates one-of-a-kind portraits in the studio and on location, reproduces fine art and a myriad of other kinds of photography. She is also an experienced teacher of photography at the college level and in workshop settings. Her formal background includes studies in fine art, math and science at Bard College, Dutchess Community College and Rochester Institute of Technology.
Ms. Adams’ May display is a compilation of botanical photographs that merge of fine art photography and scientific explorations. These images tell a story as well as being a portrait of the plant or object. The photographs are documents that display the simple, elegant and ingenious structure and appearance of the specimens.
Guided Meditation
Wednesday, May 13 at 6 pm
Presented by Nancy Causey, owner of the Half Moon Yoga Barn. Yoga Nidra is a state of conscious sleep reached through guided meditation. It has a profound calming effect on the central nervous system, which in turn has a positive effect on anxiety, tension, and depression. Participants will lie down on a blanket on the floor with support for head and knees.

Think Beyond the Window Box Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 pm
Presented by Donna Crosier, Master Gardener with Cornell University Cooperative Extension. Bring your imagination and creativity and learn unique ways to see items you already have as potential containers for your plants. Registration encouraged.

Presented by Dan Calabrese, of Calabrese Insurance. Mr. Calabrese is an independent insurance agent licensed and Medicare certified in New York. He specializes in the Senior Market focusing on Medicare, Life Insurance and Long Term Care. Registration is encouraged.

50th Anniversary Display of the Vietnam War
The Millbrook Library is excited to be hosting a display put together by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. The display, located in the Franklin Avenue display case, showcases artifacts from the war and its veterans. The DAR also has certificates available to give out to local Vietnam veterans to honor their service during the war. Contact Stephanie Harrison at 677-3611 x3 for more details.

For Teens & Tweens we are offering a “Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film Making†Day as well as an “Introduction to Babysitting†course.
Our “Summer Readers Club†will be running from June 22nd through August 8th. Keep a reading record at the Library and record each day that you read. Pick a treasure from the Treasure Box each time you come in to add to your reading record. Earn raffle tickets for prize raffles in August!
